For Christmas I got a Nashville EZX Expansion Pack for EZDrummer.

One of the presets is "Hands" and I was expecting percussion, like congas or bongos. Instead it's drum sets played with fingers instead of sticks.

I've never heard of this--is it common practice in Nashville? If so, why?

It's for re-creating the Moby Dick drum solo, of course.

Wouldn't that be sampled from a desk top or the top of a steering wheel?

Edit: I missed that Moby Dick drum solo reference first time around. Shame on me. If it's supposed to be that kind of technique, the grooves associated with the kit don't reflect it.

Yet another edit:  after experimenting with the presets a bit more, it is more like a bongo set with a bass drum and subtle cymbals.

Are there more musicians? I don't see where the snaps are coming from and there's a bongo roll at the end that Sperling doesn't play. Maybe the guy that's seen right as the camera pulls out at the end is playing, too? Maybe a house band?

If it's a track, that's some fine syncing. Looks live to me.

re: the finger drums, I really like the sound, and I think it'll be useful in EZDrummer. But, the heck with this topic, about that song and performance...

How many of today's singers would dare do a whole song with just percussion and bass? With key changes? A quick survey of Youtube versions reveals Elvis and Peggy did, but the modern divas (even Buble) all add instrumentation. It takes guts to hang out there for three minutes with nothing but a string bass for pitch reference. And, most importantly, not become boring.

Besides being supported by superb musicians, she basically completely owned everything in that performance! Her control of the entire thing, down to the gestures that matched the drum rolls/flourishes were done with a calm, smoldering conviction that can only come from someone who is truly in charge! (I wonder what she was like to work with?).

There is a clip somewhere of Joe Morello playing the "Take Five" solo with hands on "Playboy After Dark". Hef is like 3 feet away boppin.

I only remember her from the tail end of her career and I recall, as she gained weight and health failed, she was a bit scary looking.  I mostly remember "Is That All There Is?" from her.

Gotta say, this version of Fever is sexy personified--
Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Christine Aguilera, et. al., take notice. This sizzles without skimpy costumes, choreography or special effects from a woman who had to be in her late 40's at the time.

IIRC Terry Bozio did an amazing "by hand drum solo" on Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes concert DVD ... Worth the purchase just for that!  He may have had a set of bongos between his legs too, but I'm foggy on that.

I worked with Mariza two years ago and her drummer "Vicki" played an amazing set of "new Fado" with his hands, sticks, brushes and all manner of techniques. The kit was a hybrid of trap and hand percussion but he used the snare by hand as much as with a striking implement.

He seemed to have some Bozzioisms.

Wonderful!  Worth watching for his facial expressions, let alone his incredible playing.
