I could see a "Hi-Fi iPod" kick starting a move towards higher quality download formats.

Never happen, Rick. The best promotional tool the music business has ever had could be bought for less than $5.00.

Dan (mgod) may in fact be on to something when he suggests there is a consumer revolt going on.  I think that's part of the picture anyway -

I think it IS part of the picture.
But I doubt it's about format quality as much as rejecting the aesthetic of the recording/mastering

you can't say "the public DEMANDS auto-tuned, beat corrected, loudness maximised recordings" when the public is clearly refusing to pay for it; in droves

If people could (illegally) download a new Mercedes for free, most would.

Why thank you!

Perhaps cool it a bit here on WW.

Thanks.

you can't say "the public DEMANDS auto-tuned, beat corrected, loudness maximised recordings" when the public is clearly refusing to pay for it; in droves

Absolutely.  By the same logic you could also question the notion that the public doesn't give a shit about the lossy compression.

That horrible grainy warbly sound alienates me and I'm a very tolerant listener.  I hear the song, know who the singer is and have no sense of involvement even if it's a track I like.  Am I some kind of purist?  Old fogey?  Hell no.  (Well old, but not a fogey damnit)

By the way, I have heard your above-cited quote spoken by A&R personnel, engineers, producers and especially band members.

Where did this poison come from?  It's insane.

The desire to be famous seems to be more important than the music.

But at the end of the day it´s the labels, I think. A lot of bands and musician still follow their visions, dreams of music. But the moment they trying to make it big all good intentions are gone with the wind and they wanna sound like all the others. Who told them "all the others" are making money?

I don't think you can blame labels fir this one

The vast majority of soul-less sterile, flat line brittle records aren't ON actual "labels"

I blame "producer" insecurity. Even if that nominative producer is just the band.

We have to work on making it lossless for the artist first.
