infinite baffle and broad band bass trap.
« on: January 20, 2011, 09:34:37 AM »

Hi:

I need some advise,

Im going flush mount 2 speakers and would like to know how to build the wall so it works as infinite baffle and as a broad band bass trap.

it´s has been suggested to me to use 2 layers of gypsum for the wall and acoustic hangers behind the wall.

the existing front wall dimensions are  5m x 2,5m

I would not advise you to take this route. Check this other thread:
http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/t/33318/20730/

Building a sealed box (infinite baffle) is easy.
Making a wall as an absorber and TUNING it is almost uncontrollable. Making it wide band (i.e. damping it) is also difficult.

I agree with Geoff.

In thread about our acoustical principle you can find a post    http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/t/33208/11544/#ms g_num_9 with flush mounted speakers, but with front "baffle" built with air transparent diffusers. Behind it are low end bass trap built with general Hidley/Newell principle (hanged panels) used in non-environment rooms.

Baffle built with air transparent diffusers "smear" diffraction from loudspeaker edges, but don't amplify low end that much, like infinite battle, and in this case you probably don't need to change loudspeaker crossover (a much Smile ), also they don't stop air circulation needed for proper low end absorption in room

More about air transparent diffusers and bass traps behind it you can find in our publications page at    http://www.myroom-acoustics.com/index.php?option=com_content &view=section&id=5&Itemid=72

Hope this helps.
