TC Electronic BMC-2
« on: December 10, 2010, 10:33:02 PM »

I'm going to try one of these as a monitor controller. It should be good for doing A/B comparisons of two digital sources and where advanced switching is not needed.

http://www.tcelectronic.com/bmc-2.asp

It uses upsampling and the same jitter rejection used in the System 6000. Also it can adjust the volume to a user defined level with a buttonpress.

Has anyone here tried one? Opinions?

i had one for home use for a while.
macbook pro->BMC2->adcom 555 -> duntec PCL15s

it sounded fine.  better then then using the outputs on my macbook pro directly into the amp/speakers

features were good, didn't like the weird resolution of the gain controller.
it would "snap" to zero when near it.

still, for the price.. its pretty unbeatable in terms of features if only have digital outputs feeding it

Thanks John.

I'm not yet clear about what happens with this when you go over 0 dbfs. I guess it applies some type of digital gain before going to the DAC.

It's an interesting gadget for sure. I figure I'll either love it or hate it after 30 days of using it.  Smile

This has to be one of the best values ever.

It has volume control n the digital domain, and excellent sound.

I use it with  Genelec dsp speakers with  AES inputs

Thanks for the info Mike.

Mine arrived this week and I am not dissappointed. It sounds good. I would say that it sounds equally good as the converters in my RME Multiface. I can't say that it sounds any better. I'm just not sure yet.

I did encounter one problem and that is that it only has balanced outputs on the analog side. This is a minor problem for me as my amp is unbalanced (Hafler DH-200). I can't get a newer amp just yet so I made up some cables mentioned in the Appendix. Pin2 hot, Pin3 to ground on the unbalanced lead. On the initial listen I figured that this setup is driving the circuitry too hard as I heard a bit of distortion.

So I resorted to running the balanced outputs into my mixer. Not really what I wanted to do but the mixer also feeds my subwoofer.

Usage:
In listening to entries in WUMP22 I can have Samplitude route all of the entries to SPDIF and send the original track to ADAT 1/2. So I solo the WUMP entry I want to hear. The original track stays soloed at all times and I can do the A/B switching on the BMC-2 by pressing SPDIF or ADAT

i used mine with the unbal adcom perfectly fine, no distortion or weirdness.

I don't know.... it seemed liked it I was having to run the knob at a higher level too. Maybe the input impedance of the amp is higher or something and I wasn't getting a good signal transfer.

After using it for a while I will recheck it as I wasn't that familiar with what to expect with this.

Thanks for letting me know of your experience with it.

edit: on re-checking this I could have been mistaken. Probably any distortion I was hearing was in the audio I was listening to.

The headphone amp in this thing sounds great!
