Am I Crazy to Buy a Korg MR-2000S DSD Recorder???
« on: December 06, 2010, 12:33:41 PM »

Since it's discontinued?  I can't find any news on the discontinuation. In fact, when I look at Korg's website, there is no mention of the discontinuation.

Anyone have any insights into the lifecycle of this product? Is Korg completely shelving it or possibly coming out with new models?

Sorry for replying to my own thread.....one more thought/question.

Isn't the 5.6MHz DSD rate proprietary?  I know I can use the bundled software to convert my mixes to other formats but what happens when that software is not supported/out-of-date with the next MacOS release?

Has it been discontinued?  Where did you read that?  Are you sure you're not thinking about the MR-1?

I spoke to a Korg person at the recent AES.
He assured me the MR1000 and 2000 are very much still current production units.

Oh, fantastic. I guess I had heard some mis-info on the 1000/2000 series.

I appreciate the info guys.

Thanks,

If it WERE being discontinued, I would buy one or two more right now, just in case.

Sadly, Keith, according to the UK Korg website they are discontinued...
http://www.korg.co.uk/products/discontinued/mr/dr_mr2000s.ph p

I recommended the portable version the MR1000 to several people as a field recorder, and I'd thought about buying an MR2000 for my mastering studio, to capture the end of my analogue chain for high resolution archive purposes.

A real shame it's discontinued.

Terry, do you have the portable or rackmount version?

For the studio that was my choice, but the portable is a cute device for sure.

Why would they discontinue it in the UK but not the US?  Waiting for the other shoe to drop?

Either way, I ordered a rackmount one today.....

Are you using these as a master recorder?

How is the quality of the i/o and conversion?

Thanks...

I mix to it.

I master from it.

There is no "conversion" as in the commonly known sense.

It is the best mixdown format I have ever used.

Here are a few other threads about the KORG DSD machines.

 http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/m/265053/6490/?sr ch=DSD#msg_265053

Their proprietary dff format is twice the quality of any other DSD.

Thanks Terry.  Great threads.

I'm going to have to get one of these.  I have the Tascam DSD recorder (first version), but I have to admit that while I am enjoying the quality, it is a major PITA to have to format discs, which is slow, and then to have them in a format that can basically only be used on the TASCAM machine.

This Korg sounds like a more sensible approach.

I can't believe they are discontinuing these!  Is a new version coming ir is Korg just abandoning the idea?

Thanks all for the great info!

I love - LOVE - the MR2000s. Several clients send DSD files and this box works beautifully, sounds great. The only complaint is the lack of a remote, other than that it's perfect, imo.

It's the MR-1 that's been discontinued, replaced by the MR-2.
