Help save wild salmon with your online vote
« on: December 03, 2010, 11:22:01 pm »

PSW people - You can help save a bit of the natural World just by your online vote. The 'winner' receives $160,000 to fund their project idea.

Someone I know is working on this salmon campaign with an organization similar to the UK National Trust.

What the Aboriginal people knew for 1000's of years, scientists are just figuring out which is that West coast salmon
are responsible a massive transfer of nutrients carried from the ocean into inland areas as the salmon return to spawn.
They provide food for all kinds of animals, bacteria and even lush forests & plants (decomposing carcasses).

Salmon are under threat.

Save Wild Salmon!

Please Help Protect the Horsefly River Riparian Conservation Area. Horsefly River has the 2nd highest salmon run in B.C. and is one of the most productive wild salmon rivers in the world.

To save B.C.’s world-famous wild salmon it is crucial to protect the habitat upon which they rely. These amazing fish require healthy streams and rivers to complete their millennia-old cycle of returning to their place of birth to spawn and then die. Without salmon, First Nations' culture will be dramatically altered throughout much of B.C., commercial and sport fisheries will be severely negatively affected, along with many wild creatures that feed on salmon including orcas, grizzly and black bears, wolves and bald eagles. If we can help save wild salmon by providing them with the habitat they need, our children and our grandchildren's future will be enriched.

The Horsefly River is one of BC’s most valuable wild salmon rivers. While as many as four species of salmon and one species of trout spawn in the Horsefly and its tributaries, the Horsefly is best known for its prolific runs of sockeye - more than 2 million sockeye have been counted in the Horsefly at one time.

Between 1999 and 2006 we have acquired approximately 1,000 acres of habitat along this river to help protect valuable salmon habitat. Known as the Horsefly River Riparian Conservation Area (HRRCA), this site represents almost 12 km of river shoreline, some of which is the best sockeye spawning habitat in the entire watershed. Currently, TLC The Land Conservancy of B.C. is trying to add to this conservation area by purchasing an additional 56 acres of mixed forest and intact riparian (river front) habitat along the Horsefly River.

Our new acquisition, for which we are looking for financial support, is of great importance to salmon as it protects a further 500 m of intact river front habitat. Such areas are critical for maintaining clean, clear water, a factor that is so important to salmon conservation. In addition, this parcel provides habitat for grizzly and black bears that congregate along the river during salmon spawning season. Also, it's home to a wide range of waterfowl, songbirds, and mammals. Three provincially blue-listed bird species, Sandhill Crane, Great Blue Heron and American Bittern are all found in the area. This acquisition is also of great strategic value because it removes a piece of private land that is between the HRRCA and Provincial Crown Land designated as critical wetland habitat for moose, and an old-growth forest management area.

To promote awareness and community involvement TLC is an active participant in the community-run Horsefly River Salmon Festival and we also work with the Horsefly River Round Table. We also work in close association with the Williams Lake Field Naturalists. Our work has also allowed us to bring youth-at-risk out to the HRRCA to do restoration work, and participate in Nature Canada/ BC Nature’s Parks and People Program, an outreach program designed to bring children out to parks and protected areas. TLC also runs field trips and conservation holiday in the HRRCA. These youth and family oriented activities counteract what has been called "nature deficit disorder" in the young who are disconnected from the natural world. The power of this river when it is red with spawning wild salmon is unforgettable.

Our wild salmon are a resource for BC, Canada and the world. TLC is seeking $160,000 to protect this valuable wild salmon river. Please help protect our wild salmon by voting everyday for Horsefly River Riparian Conservation Area.

Thanks a lot Barry!

Appreciate it,

I just found out the top 10 ideas in this contest all get awarded $160k so there's hope yet!

The salmon are essential to the whole ecosystem up here, a fact which is only now being appreciated by modern science - lagging a few millennia behind what the aboriginal people already figured out!

Salmon are also the main food source for what's known as the resident Orca / Killer Whale population up here on the coast.
