Technical issues recording an orchestra
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:27:19 AM »

So tonight i am supposed to be recording an orchestra playing along with a 5 piece jazz band.
I thought I had it all worked out but a detail emerged this week that I cannot deal with.

index.php/fa/15938/0/

Unfortunately this has led to the cancellation of tonight's performance.
I was really looking forward to this and to be frank, really needed the work.

...you were recording them outdoors...?

Wink

My mum was supposed to be flying over from your side of the pond today, but can't make it, due to a late illness. -She was REALLY looking forward to spending the next few weeks in Florida instead of up to her armpits in snow... -Although it certainly LOOKS pretty!

The last few weeks I've been recording the local Philharmonic quite a bit. -I'm enjoying it a lot, although the room I'm working in sounds a little like it's full of snow at times. (I could easily use another second RT60!)

Nassau it aint.

Decision was the correct one. The orchestra was 40 piece, plus band and tech staff then anticipated audience of 150ish.

Roads here are really bad and any journeys are taking a lot longer than usual. Primarily due to lorries jack knifing.

I sympathise, Keith. I have to go to London tomorrow and it's looking doubtful. Bugger.

We are about that and more. I measured at least 65cm = 25"
Worse still, the layers of snow fall are compacting, some freezing solid and forming ridges on the roads. It is like trying to cross rail tracks.

I had to walk two miles in it yesterday from work, to get my daughter from school as it was shutting.

Leeds was gridlocked pretty quickly as people still insisted on taking shortcuts through the narrow, steep local roads.

You notice muscles you never knew you had the next day!

Don't ever remember snow in this quantity this early before.

Terry, does it amuse the hell out of you to report on such weather happenings while your living in the Bahamas? I have to admit that I would feel a jolt of schadenfreude all through me while I walked a warm sandy beach. Then I would pick a piece of fresh fruit from a tree in my yard and eat it.

HEY NOW...

We had weather issues here as well, not immune to that.

It clouded over this morning, and was a bit windy.  Temp dropped to probably under 80F.

Then it cleared up again...

Dropped to -13c by 11pm here last night.
By that stage breathing gets a bit funny feeling.
Last year I found below -17c it started to hurt the nose when taking a breath.

Darn... -It's getting near time for the Avocado tree outside Terry's house to bear fruit, unless I'm much mistaken!

I have to say, it's distinctly chilly round here. -A couple of degrees lower, and I'll have to start wearing SOCKS!

HA!  I am eating fresh perfect avocados every day now in the salad. We have so many we can't possibly eat them all.

Plus, two more trees started bearing this year, yikes.

Clifford brought by seven tomato plants (already with fruit growing) last weekend, so those are now shooting up as well.

Hope it doesn't snow...

I used to get up at half past ten at night, half an hour before I went to bed ...  Very Happy

Snow not so pretty now.

Very heavy snowfall all day today.
Scotland ground to a halt, for various reasons, numpties playing a big part.

We now have a steady stream of cold water pouring into our bedroom from above the window frame.

Been out at 2.30am on a ladder trying to clear as much from the roof as possible but I think the problem has been a slight thaw yesterday creating a huge block of ice throughout all the guttering and on the edge of the roof.

Joyous.

My day job is in selling roofing products. Being from Canada, snow and cold temperatures are common. Usually ice dams are caused by a lack of ventilation combined with heat loss . The leaking is due to improper eave protection. Of course if lots of snow is unusual in your area, the local building code may not require extra protection. It is possible to add ventilation in the winter if you can find someone willing to to do it. You must have both air intake at the soffits and outflow at the peak or venting won't take place. There are also electrical heat tapes that can be installed to melt the ice and create channels for drainage. The cost of electricity can be quite high though. Proper venting and adequate insulation are the best solution.
Sometimes people vent their bathroom fans into the attic. This can cause major ice dam problems and frost from condensation to form on the underside of the roof which melts when the temperature rises making it appear that the roof is leaking. Skylights are also a common source of ice dams and require waterproofing from the skylight to the eave

Turned out that the snow was so deep it had blocked the roof venting system.
What happened then as far as I can tell is that during the warm spell on Sunday there has been a thaw. The water has filled the gutters and then frozen rapidly after dusk.
temp drop on Sunday went from +4c at 2.30pm to approximately -9c by 9pm and then very heavy snow fall from 8am Monday morning to about 5pm.

The thaw then ice had built up around the vent cover and actually lifted the whole unit up by about 2cm. Snow had then got in and as it warmed with heat loss from house, melted and poured in.

Spent 3 hours yesterday up tall ladder with shovel breaking up as much ice as possible and clearing all around the vent.
Did some more today.

Not had any more water in after that first 4 hour  spell.

At least 5 people I know have similar issues today, my parents house is apparently flooded in two rooms up/down. That may be pipes though.

Winters are definitely getting more severe here.
