Another new DDP player...
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:06:54 AM »

I'm sure several other folks here will have got an email from Audiofile engineering about their new DDP player, Backline DDP
http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/backline/?utm_source=Au diofile+Engineering+Newsletter&utm_campaign=64c6431fd9-D ecember_1_201012_1_2010&utm_medium=email

I've asked about a customised player I can sent to clients for approvals, so we'll see how that stacks up against some of the other offerings. It's Mac only, but it will burn a CD from either a PPC or intel machine [unlike the Sonoris product on the Mac, although the Sonoris is cross platform, Windows AND Mac]

And there's another one to be launched soon (this month, it has been said).

Not sure whether that's mac only or PC too.

Being a Pyramix user I am very happy with Sonoris' support of Pyramix' .pmi master images. For me that's it's secret power.

Sending a 'useless' format like .pmi to the customer somehow feels safer.
After approval only one DDP master gets made. No confusion with DDP files of various versions of the master 'out there' on god knows who's computer.

Merging / Pyramix also have a free image player.
It only plays .pmi images (the Pyramix master image format), no DDP yet (I think).
No CD burning either, maybe it's planned but they keep it rather secretive.

"Tonic" will be coming out in a few days at an introductory price.
A PC version is in the works but has taken alittle more time to "get it right".  Just like mastering, nothing leaves until it's right.
I hope you guys really dig Tonic.  I tried to design it to do everything I would want a player to do.
It's totally customizable (colors, logos, backgrounds) has the ability to see all the info you would expect (DDP, ISRC, CDtext)
Can burn a CD, has full CORE audio support and has a built in time stamped note taking system that links to your email.  That function alone was reason enough to put this thing together.  How many people call me and say; "in that one song around 3 minutes it sounds funny" ... umm.  No more of that hopefully.

Cheers,

That's excellent!  I think having both a Mac and PC version is essential for something we are going to be using for client approvals...  do you have a time estimate for the PC version, or is it going to release with the Mac version?

Got a meeting in an hour about that.  What's likely is we will release the Mac version now (in a few days) for a very reasonable price.  The PC version will follow sometime in the beginning of the year.. I would say half my clients have a mac and the other half who do not I have been able to arrange a listening session at the studio they mixed at with the player.  It's not ideal but it can be done.  If Tonic gets some legs I'm sure we can get it out pretty quick.

++edit++  Price will be set at $279, when the PC version comes out (early/mid 2011) the upgrade fee for those who jump in will be $29 to get the Mac/PC support.  News letter 001 with all the details is online - http://tonepropersoftware.com/News/News.html

Can you make the client have some gin when you send them a Tonic file?

That would be nice, gonna cost extra!  I thought for awhile to do something like that...  It's remarkably hard to come up with a good name.
I was hoping for the "Angry Minnow" after going to a small brewery in Wisconsin with the same name... send a pint o' beer with every successful client approval and TWO for the engineer! ha!
