I have had the opportunity to hear for e few hours an old pair of 4312 JBL speakers. I really liked them.

Anyone here knows what is the difference between the 4310, 4311 and 4312 series? Is it just size?

I've got a pair of 4312 waiting for me to pick up if I ever get round to it. They have a carbon, or paper tweeter, which I'm told hasn't the greatest frequency response. But for being free hard to beat. Need to replace the woofers though. One was punctured in a move, so I want to replace both. I'm also told I need send a good 250 watts each to them, and an Adcom GFA555 is recommended for that duty.

I used 4310s and 4311s for quite a while in the 80's. My humble personal impression is 4310s go very loud and have a scooped "hi-fi" sound that results in very nasal mixes. The 4311s not so much and so your mixes will sound better.

The last thing I want to do when mixing is "like" my speakers.

Well thanks for that.
I have to like the timbre of what I hear, otherwise I get annoyed and hurt (like with the 1031 or 8040).
I think what I really like is the paper speakers.
I like the NS10, at low or medium levels, probably because of the paper woofer.

If you dislike the 1031 you'll probably also dislike the 4310/4311/4312.
Very much the inverse of NS10's
Scooped out middle, beamy highs, bloomy bass.

Then maybe it was the pair i've had to listen. It was very different from the 1031 next to them. First of all, the three drivers made them repond much more evenly in mids and high migh.
It also gave me a more palpable sound instead of the razor blade sound of the 1031 (the old ones, in wood. the new ones are even worse to me).
