I just finished a CD and as is typical made a master cd and a few refs from that master.  All of them have either a click or a tiny burst of music at the very end of the last track when played back in his car.  When I rip the files back into the computer there is nothing there.  When I play the discs in the control room player.. nothing there.  He's scared that the click will show up on the duplicated cds, and all I can tell him is that the noise is NOT there... but I can not explain why his car player (and according to him, two other car players that he owns) makes the sound.

I tried all the tricks at my disposal and could not replicate the clicks outside of his car.

Mitsui media, 4x burn from Jam.  I ran discs with Jam applying a .5 second fade at the end of the last file and without the fade... both clicked in his car.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Did you try burning a disc of something else entirely to see if maybe his car simply doesn't like CDRs?

I've never heard of this issue.

Hi Brad-

That would have been smart.  I am totally baffled by it... I've run into players that skip and stutter with cdrs, but never an issue like this one!

To be clear, the original was burned with Jam, but how were the copies made?

Dupe refs were made high speed from the master in a stand-alone tower replicator.  Click appeared in car system regardless of whether we played the master or a ref.

Maybe try another burner to burn the master with if you have a spare?

Hey Tom-

I could have tried that... should have thought of it!  What I can't understand is that the noise was not on the disc when I ripped the files back into the computer, and did not show up on my cd player.

I also just got a note from the artist that the disc plays fine at his house.  Weird.

I'd ask him if he's played any other CDrs in his vehicles.

Some car players and CD walkman's have buffers in them so they won't skip going over bumps. Maybe it's a buffer issue.

Could be... car was standing still in my parking lot when we did the testing, though!

I've seen a similar problem before - a tiny bit of (I assume buffered) audio makes a click at the end of the last track.  Sometimes you can fool the player by adding a couple seconds of silence after the last track.

I do this to every master unless told otherwise. I never liked the clunk clunk of the CD transport stopping right after the last note.

+1.  I usually give about 4 seconds as I always find the sound of the CD player stopping distracting from whatever vibe you may have gotten from the ending track as well.

Thanks for this!  Have you seen it in pressed cds as well... or is it something specific to cdrs?  Can't imagine the player discriminating in that way.

From now on, extra silence at the end of every master!!

Thanks, guys.

I can remember years ago when I was running a Sonic classic system, and using Jam to burn the actual CD (from a Jam image file created by Sonic) that there was a set of circumstances that lead to a burst of audio right at the leadout. I can't for the life of me remember what it was that caused it (a specific set of circumstances that I then learned to avoid) since that was 10-ish years ago.

I too always leave a bit of silence at the end of audio - I like to round up to the next :05 or :10 second mark...
