converter talk
« on: August 23, 2004, 06:42:27 PM »

I know I'm not the first person to ask this question, but I was wondering what the latest word is.

I've had a bitch of a time finding an Otari Radar II at a price I can afford.  Not only does the Radar have a user interface that seems to make a computer unnecessary for editing, but the converters are supposed to sound really good.  With a Radar apparently not in my immediate future, I've been looking for the most cost-effective way to get 24 channels of A/D/A conversion that doesn't suck.  Even if I end up creating a Samplitude or Nuendo rig as a multitrack (no internal mixing), I've been looking to the Alesis HD24/24XR and the Tascam MX2424 for converters, both of which can be obtained used on the cheap these days.  I've been told the Mackie units sound less than stellar.  So what's the scoop?  Sound quality is my main concern, reliability in the field a second.  Both systems have compatibility with computer audio formats.

Thanks,
Nicholas
