Anyone else get this email??? Scam or???
« on: November 16, 2010, 09:50:56 AM »

my name is XXX i am
looking for a new mastering studio to master our forthcoming releases. our
label is releasing on a regular schedule so you can count on
quite a lot of jobs/collabs.

i am about to release a XX track album (there will be a CD/digital
as well as vinyl release so you might have to master 2 slightly different
versions of each tune) and therefor i am looking for a mastering
studio/engineer of my trust and sympathy.

i therefor wanted to ask if you are offering to master one (around 2mins
long) "test" master of one tune on a free of charge basis in order to
evaluate your work. i prefer it this way over relying on any reference
masters of yours since only this way i can A/B your work with the mastering
of a few other mastering studios i contacted as well, in order to deceide
which one i like best.

if that is possible please get back to me so i will send you a link with a
3mins version of the most characteristic (it s an album by one producer and
not a VA so this tune might act as a reference for all when it comes to
mixing characteristics) track of the album. the mix would be a 32bit
44.1kHz stereo wav (without any dynamics effects or EQing on the
master/stereo out) with a peak headroom of around -3dbfs.

also please give me an idea of your mastering approach (eg. M/S, pure
analog or pure dsp or a mixture, if you fancy multiband compressors, if it
is a real pain for you to master (over)loud tracks (with us being a part of
the loudness war  Wink  ) on demand, if you already mastered sub-bass focusing
genres like XXX before and if you mastered for vinyl releases as well
as for digital/CD releases before). i am aware your approach of mastering
will most likely depend of the individual tune you are working on but
please try to give me and idea of your general preferences if possible.
also please quote your prices for 14 as well as 4 tracks (for forthcoming
EPs) assuming there might be a reduced pricing.

thanks in advance and looking forward to hearing from you,

Why do you think this is a scam?  Seems like the guy is just shopping for a new ME and is inquiring you for a sample so he can hear your work.

No reason to think it's a scam, although it is a rather long email to have to read considering you'll almost certainly never earn a penny from this guy.

I got this one too. I assume it's not a scam, as others have said. But I assume that a lot of MEs got it.

Yes, these questions are very common.  I see no reason whatsoever to suspect it..............

Yes, got that one. More spam than scam. Sorry, no free tests here either... Prefer to spend all my attention & energy on paying customer who come through recommendations or return business and understand the importance of a trusting relationship with a good mastering engineer...

Didn't get it (lucky?), but would probably politely pass. Not against doing a test, just usually too busy to turn them around in a timely manner.

Well said, sir.

Not averse to the (very) occasional test, in fact I was working on one this morning, but it would have to have good provenance to make me want to consider it.
