Monitor advice wanted
« on: November 07, 2010, 11:53:37 PM »

Hey all,

Thanks in advance for any helpful nuggets of wisdom!

As some of you know, I've only been mastering professionally for about a year, although I've been doping it to my own and my friends mixes for the last ten years or so. As you may also know, for that whole period I have been using Yamaha MSP5 monitors, in the same room, which I have come to know and love.

Next year, we'll probably be re-locating to Milan, from Yokohama, and at that time I am imagining I'll have about UK

Hi Gregg,

Of the speakers you've been offered I'd be wanting to check out the ATCs - I haven't heard the 20s, but it's been said they possess the same 'family' thing as larger speakers in the range (and those I do know), albeit in a two-way enclosure and with a higher bass rolloff - it's possible you might want to think about a sub or subs if you took that route.

Focals? What I've heard of them sounded good, though I don't especially think of the smaller ones as mastering speakers for some reason. Your budget might cover a second-hand set of PMC AML1s, now superseded by AML2s which could help keep the price down a bit. I've used the 1s for a few years now and can definitely recommend them for mastering, although on a different tack I do know that Bob Macc (UK-based, sometimes seen both here and at GS) is selling a set of K+H 300s in your price bracket - contact Bob direct for more details or PM me for his email if required.

Thanks for your input Nigel. I have also heard good things about those PMCs you mention, but I'm probably going to go with the ATC's.

Thanks. My friend (who will sell me his ATCs) assures me they will be incomparable with my current Yamahas!

This is true. I haven't heard the Yamahas, but I suspect the ATCs will be in a different league resolution-wise.

ATC makes excellent speakers, especially the 3-way designs. The mid-domes are superb. Even though the ones you refer to are 2-way, they'll still sound great.

We had passive 20's for classical location recording duties, with active 50's in the mastering room. There's a family resemblance, but the mids and overall coherence of the 50's are pretty remarkable and a fair old step up from the 20's. I've never felt the need for subs with the 50's, and the measurements ATC did of the room bore that out. Great speakers.

Cheers,

Eric

Thanks for the advice Eric. I'd love to be able to get the SCM50 ASL Pro's, and be done with it forever, but there's no way I could stretch for a new pair. They go for around GB

Dragging up an oldish thread...

Thanks once again for all the excellent and informative replies so far!

Well, it looks like re-location from Yokohama to Milan will be some time in April or May.

I am still wondering about monitors. It seems they are definitely the thing to upgrade first, then worry about the converters a bit later.

I've recently been offered the following, for around the same price:

1) A pair of ATC SCM 50 ASL Pros

2) A pair of ATC SCM 20 ASL Pros PLUS one ATC SCM 1/15 Sub

The 20/Sub combo is slightly more expensive.

I master 95% modern electronic music.

So, the question is, would you go for the lovely 50's, or the 20's and the Sub?

I'll have the opportunity to demo both in the shop, so will of course do this and take some recordings along, but before I do, are there any opinions so far? I'd be really happy if "The Essex Boys" jumped in with their recommendations. Wink
