Black Dub: Latest Record
« on: November 06, 2010, 08:47:07 PM »

I purchased the latest 'Black Dub' CD yesterday, from a local record store and gave it a listen!  I'm honestly feeling like, "What the hell happened?".  Confused

"Here Is What Is" sounded fantastic, great songs and mixed beautifully!
This latest release sounds funny.
The first two songs sound hollow and sibilant, takes sound off too.
The rest of the album sounds practically unfinished and not in a good way.   The takes on the album don't even come close to the ones posted in the live YouTube videos.

The song "Surely" seemed to draw me in and I enjoy.

Any who...Musically speaking and after waiting this long, I'm pretty disappointed.  Dare I say this album sounds kind of amateur or rushed?  It left me wondering if they sent the WRONG pressing to the plant!

Anyone else heard it yet?

I mastered "Here Is What Is". Without speaking for them, the Lanois production team tend to ask for something close to flat transfers, as opposed to current traditional mastering, not much in the way of level or compression added.

I'll buy a download today and give er a spin.

I mastered "Here Is What Is". ...

I can't let this one pass without taking the chance to congratulate you.

It's one of the most amazing sounding CDs i own (have both the CD and the CD+DVD release).

Doing professional mastering myself i must confess i use "Here Is What Is" as a reference, together with "Acadie" (also by Lanois) and a couple more albums whose sound i regard as "ear balancing tools".

Production and musicianship aside, "Here Is What Is" is what mastering is all about.

So, here is what is mastering.

Great work! Congrats.

bought the download, listening in my mastering room, there is no mastering credit,

I believe, for instance, they did not master Time Out Of Mind (Dylan), if memory serves, Mark Howard is credited for mastering.

back with more when I've had a proper listen.

I finally got the record, imported from Us of A.
Well, it's the first time in history of the world you can actually say that the you tube version sounds better than the Cd.
Freaking disappointing!
I wish they had just took what's in the videos and print it to CD.
Maybe i'm actually going to do that, ha!

It's hard to believe, but true.  Confused
Haven't listened to it since I bought it and probably wont ever, unfortunately.  It's a shame! Crying or Very Sad
