RND 5033 MEQ
« on: October 10, 2010, 12:04:50 PM »

Hi everyone.

I've been using a pair of Rupert Neve Design Portico EQ's (5033) for some years now and have completely loved them since day one except from the pots. So I decided to step things up. Without having a schematic, nor any guidelines.

Fortunately I could ventilate my ideas with the good board member Jaakko Viital

All wire is red PTFE making it a PITA to search things through. As some might notice I am a little so-so with the soldering, but things do work as supposed:

Frontplate. Top row for Gain, middle row for freq and bottom for the Q. 4 switches for the bands (H shelf+L shelf on one switch) and the bottom-most switch for all bypass. This is just a prototype so it looks a little so-so, but I will get a decent front plate for it.

Eventhough it is a lot funny to twist completely blind, which made me stop the drunk-guy-drilling around the knobs...:

Hey, you made it work! I was just going to ask that. Well done!

Now do the other channel, design a front panel and you have a killer EQ for ages.

great work. I am a bit jealous as I was looking into doing something similar with the dual8803 as the sound of the unit is nice but the controls are terrible for mastering.

the 8803 is a tease that you can save settings via usb but somehow neve did not continue to support and make a software option to actual control the eq

I should add that I went ahead with my adventure not really because the 5033 EQ sounds nice, which it kind of does, but because it sounds so free of artifacts. No ugly distortion is being thrown back, especially not when narrowed down to 3 dB up/down from the original 12 dB's/filter.

Those Elma 04's are difficult to work with. It took me years to figure out how to do those neatly. Yours look good. Congratulations.

Excellent and inspiring job Patrik!

Been wanting to something similar for my Sontec MEP250EX but after consulting with a tech on how much of a p.i.t.a. this would be went the easier rout of just modding the gain pots' ranges.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

My 250a is almost done, although we didn't go with switches for all of the controls.  Not as fancy as Patriks, but we did gang all the controls.  I will post details when it's ready.

Elfa.

The total cost for all material is approx 2000 Euros for stepping up the L and the R channel.

Well since this (the 5033) EQ just has started to behave like a complete dream (it used to be "oh so nice"), the Pultec clone is out of the rack for the moment.

I like things fewer.
