The Promise
« on: October 07, 2010, 11:02:38 PM »

HBO just broadcast "The Promise - The making of Darkness at the Edge of Town"
I have to admit this music is one of my emotional cornerstones so I can't be objective.
Yeah, It's a 90 minute commercial for a reissue
Still, it's well done & worth checking out.
Some great fly on the wall peeks of the Record Plant.

Just saw that. Really incredible.

I love that music and that album was some of his best. He does seem kinda self-important in that film, though. At least when he was a kid.

I do have some corroboration on that.

My wife's uncle Fran was his first manager. Bruce actually lived in her Grandma's basement for almost a year. Not a good relationship with his parents. But talking Fran, he acknowledged that when they would have parties or just hang out, Bruce would sit in the bedroom and just write. He said he was CONSTANTLY writing. After "Born To Run" came out, Fran, who was a self-important idiot himself, actually left Bruce stating that he felt Bruce was selling out. Incredible. The biggest dumbass career move since Pete Best.

I actually met him once in Rumsen, NJ when he came up to us at a table and said hello to my wife's grandma. Very nice guy.

That music is timeless and never fails to bring me right back to a time and a feeling. And that's the ultimate goal. Conjuring a feeling.

But the ONE thing I took from that movie (and other media like it), is that writing is king. You HAVE to write and do it ALL the time. Tom Petty's book is the same thing. Write, write and write more. Petty still writes 6-7 hours EVERY DAY. Every day.

Loved it.

saw this last night
i was touched by the relationship between miami steve and bruce

i was really struck by the integrity that Bruce had back then
in relation to his lyrics and songwriting
not that I am dissing him now, but his last few records, possibly barring the Pete Seeger record, are abysmal, and sound bad

back then he really cared and it showed in those early records

The standard of success in life isn't the things. It isn't the money or the stuff. It is absolutely the amount of joy that you feel.
