HELP! Im recording stoners!
« on: October 07, 2010, 09:11:48 PM »

A session was booked with an un-known.
Drums, bass, guitar and keyboards. The keyboard player is really good.
he is sober.
The rest are lost

They are here right now, they are all stoned and they sound like shit.

The drummer just got up in the middle of a take and announced that he needs to go to the bathroom.

I wanna go to my bed. Confused

The drummer returned, now the bass player has left.

Well, I guess this will pay the electricity bill this month.

Man, I hate that.

-Worst is when they're to stoned to HEAR that they shouldn't be trying to record any more...

-My heart goes out to you.

wouldn't be worse if they weren't stoned, were that bad,
and still didn't know?

my favorite was a young band that came in...
great gear, lotsa weed, coke, and jack daniels,
and later i learned the list also included a
good dose of acid.

they sucked soooo bad.

perfect band name though...  Binge

Man...that sucks.

I generally don't have any problem telling folks who aren't taking it seriously to hit the road.

The first couple of times I felt like a real dick...but life is too short to deal with that sort of shit.

Word of mouth is the most powerful tool I have to grow my studio, and when crappy product walks out the door because the band is high or loose...I feel like it makes ME look bad too.

So I've learned to know when to say when...even if it costs me some money.  I've even returned deposits after a 10 hour day just to get them out of my hair!  Because if it sucks now, just wait till you try to make some sense out of it at mix time.

Ewwwwww....somebody shoot me NOW!

They wont be back.

It was ridiculous how bad they sounded yet they thought they were in the pocket.

They were gone by midnight.

Really sucked.

if you ever run into this again:

tell 'em to "pass that shit", turn the clocks ahead a little, and bill a couple extra hours without their noticing.

During the course of my recording career, now over 35 years, I've thrown out some of the most famous, and or greatest players in the R&R, & R&B, sector.
Simply because of the abuse of alcohol or drugs.

Gotta be honest, I never was one to go with the idea, that hey it's so and so and they are paying $2500 a day so let them do what they want.
Nope!
Not me...
For me, the studio has always been a great place to work, but it's work...
That's what I'm being paid for, not baby siting the band, or partying.
The party comes after a hard days work, not during it...

Basically there is NO money that will make me put up with that bullshit.
Period~!

When an artist, group, manager, or friends, get out of hand, They have to leave.
There is NO discussion!
They also know I'm not kiddin.
I've made it very clear, I'm here to work.
And during working hours, we work.

I'm being paid to deliver a finished product, and one that is up to my standards, as well as the labels and the bands.
Afterwards we can relax and party, but during working hours we are here to create their vision.
And to do so, I need to be focused as do the band members.

Now after I said all this, my place has a private bar
(www.BarFunGul.com) for the bands/artists.
And boy does this get used after sessions.

BUT, I do not let anyone have a drink at my BAR before we are done with our days work.
Now if they go out and get something on their own, well so be it.

I'm not here to dictate or tell an artist what they should do.
But I'm not going to enable someone.

Simply put, Bar is closed till we are done.
No exceptions.
Or to be more specific, not before I AM DONE....and that means with everything!!
Only then will the Bar be open for them to enjoy!

Chrizzy, Chronic, Gin-an'-tonic.

I've been blessed by NEVER doing a hip-hop session in my entire life. -And I don't suppose I ever will.

While I don't make any comment as to its 'legitimacy', I can't say I've ever wanted to record hip-hop.

I did one session in 1988 with some suburban white boy wanna-be rappers, it's part of what drove me into doing film sound.
In more recent years however I've had the good fortune to work with a very talented, smart, socially conscientious rapper, and we do a lot of the tracks with real instruments.  It's been a lot of fun & creatively fulfilling for me.  Most of the Hip Hop out there, though, I could do without.

Back in the 90's I did a ton of hip-hop/gangsta rap sessions.  There was a lot of O-8 (Olde English 800) and a lot of chronic, but the main producer never got too far gone to keep the sessions going.  Once or twice (three times?) things got out of hand in general, but considering that I did 20-50 hrs/wk of gangsta rap for a few years, it wasn't a big deal.  Most of the guys I worked with didn't have the budget to screw around too much - they wanted to get their work done as quickly as possible, and made it clear to anyone else in the studio that, while having fun was great, they were there to work.
