firefighter let home burn down because owner's didn't pay fee
« on: October 05, 2010, 12:02:53 AM »

This is what happens when firefighting is only for those who have paid for it:

Hey, let's do the same with police, too.
At least no one would suggest handling health care this way. <sarcasm>

How can you call yourself a firefighter?

Disgrace to the profession..

Rationalism has it's downsides

who is right? who is wrong?

in the end wisdom is more important than reason.

Even though I shall always believe fervently that vital rescue services such as the Fire Service should be free on demand to everyone, $75 really doesn't sound like much for that sort of insurance.

Here in the UK, these charges are built in to our Council Tax - which includes Police, refuse disposal and everything else municipal - and are fully compulsory, as well as being quite expensive for most people to muster.

They gambled - opted out of a service the city provides - and lost.

Pretty telling statement, imo.

Sucks for them, but they knew going in they needed to pay the fee to have this service.

Can't blame the firefighters on this one - blame the people who refused to pay the fee or the voters of the county who elected the folks who chose this route if you're mad at someone.

Why couldn't they have extinguished the fire and then charged them the real cost of the job? On one hand, it seems like they were taking a risk, perhaps even freeloading. On the other hand, how irresponsible is it to let a fire just burn, endangering lives, destroying a home and possibly spreading to do even more damage?

Is it reasonable to assume that non-payment of the Fire Service fee would invalidate their insurance?

Brad, it's easy to take the legalistic point of view. But what if a person died of easily treatable disease while someone who was capable of providing treatment looked on with indifference because the sick person could not afford care.

I mean, this happens all the time in third world nations, but I thought we as a nation were above such things.

Oops. I guess I must be a socialist.

Suppose someone had been trapped in the burning building.

I guess I'm just bothered be the idea that they were teaching the guy a "lesson", even after he said he'd pay whatever it costs.

Suppose someone had been trapped in the burning building.

But they weren't. That's all we know about it, everything else is an assumption.

Not sure they were, again - that's an assumption.

Likely? Yah, probably. Seems silly that they wouldn't at least have a policy to engage the fire and bill the homeowner the actual cost of the fight...
