Raise your hand if you remember when they were $45 each.

And only 63 minutes.

Considering they are like 30 cents each now, the price would have to increase a lot before they would be considered non-disposable!

Sure.  More like USD$50, iirc.  When you blew one, it meant something.  I still have some of the original START Labs discs, I bet they will break Plextools if I try to analyze them........

I had one that I ran overnight in EAC and it did extract it.  The drive made sounds I had never heard come out of a burner before.

I harken back to 1994 when I would buy a box of Kodak Gold CDRs......

They cost $500 for a box of 20.....

They were boxed better than some bits of gear complete with foam and an instructions!!

Yes.. 600MB. They went for about AUD$30 each here. There were also the rarer 3" CD-Single branded versions (I still have a TDK "CD-W08") and from memory there was a bit of variance in their data capacities.

Close, I started burning 'em in '93, seems like the 3M CD-R's were $35 each, usually the 1x burner hung on at least one burn.
When the price dropped to $10 each, seemed like a miracle.

Last year I bought and used hundreds of CDs.

So far this year, only one project went out on CD, all of the rest were DDP.

So they may soon go back to $45 each...

We've probably been through a thousand CD-Rs, maybe it's a regional thing.

My best billing days are just that. The disks are of the lacquer variety though.

I'm still burning plenty of CDs.
Yes, I'm delivering more DDPs electronically, but still a fair few on optical media. [usually DVD with a nice big warning printed on it that I want the DDP folder contents replicated as audio CD just in case...]

However, I do all my QC listening from CDs burned from the master DDP, so I get through plenty like that alone. That seems wasteful, esp as they then probably end up in landfill. Is anyone using rewritable disks for this? that would seem a good thing to do if possible.

Peter

Same here. I burn a lot of CD's that I listen to in the car. I've had some RW discs, but they are so fragile, when I tried to re-record them, the drive wouldn't see them.
I must say I don't burn as many rough mix CD's for customers as I used to. It's all mp3's now, sent over internet or USB key.

In terms of physical product vs online... Noted in this weekend's major paper here:

Business must do more than extract the digital
Bruce Elder

'A stall in music downloads has the American music industry worried. Perhaps we need a new kind of music'

Somewhat ironically, I'm spending Sunday morning listening - in full - to Sting's album "Brand New Day"... (dreamt last night I was at his concert... he's touring here soon). Interestingly, his business model must be working as it costs $45 to become a member just to visit his official website.
