Clock is everything.
« on: September 28, 2010, 08:03:18 PM »

I've been listening to my older recordings, and though the engineering of some of them may be a bit spotty due to lack of skills or lack of mixing gear, I always had converters with good clocking, and therefore I feel they are real recordings.  Most people on this forum probably have access to excellent converters, but a lot of wonderful artists record at home and they're using shitty converters with a shitty clock and that's an absolute tragedy because their music can be excellent.  I think some grass roots movement to give these musicians better clock is in order.  I think my original idea of having them buy used 10+ year old Lucid converters to clock their Digi002's to was a good idea.  I just had a lovely woman stay at my place to record banjo and her vox (I didn't get any action) and I made it really clear to her that the recording process was completely independent of the releasing process.  The most important thing was documenting her creativity at this moment of her life.

I have NEVER once listened to a song and thought I would like it more if there was a different clock.
I have frequently thought I may enjoy a song more if the band arranged/performed it better.

+1

I've had people want to "clock" me on occasion.

Usually when I tell them it's not their converter's clocks that are making or breaking their music....  Twisted Evil

I dunno....I can think of a few examples where the music was great, the production stellar, etc, but there was just something about the clock that made me not buy the CD.

I think there is a new company with engineers from Bangkok and Guadelajara forming to deal with such things...

Called Thai-Mex - takes a Nicking and keeps on ticking

I don't think the 24 million people who bought "Jagged Little Pill" complained about the shitty converters and clock in that black faced ADAT, or the brittle sound sound of that record.  It would seem the songs and performance were everything.

They say the heart of Rock & Roll is still beating, which is amazing if you consider all the blow it's done over the years.

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

Yeah, they were about as bad as the clocks and converters.

That record is a constant reminder of the punishments on offer for having good taste... and knowing the real definition of the word ironic.

It's like rain on your wedding day... isn't it Ironic?

No.

That's NOT ironic; it's just unfortunate.

...Unless of course you were marrying a meteorologist, and THEY picked the date, to try and ensure clear weather.

-THEN that would be pretty friggin' ironic.

Well, it could be ionic. Maybe it's just her Canadian accent.
