Gearslutz
« on: August 16, 2010, 01:20:39 PM »

Ive been actually working and installing/building out and have missed much of the online ridiculousness for months now.

Today I went to Gearslutz, these were the first 4 threads I read-

1. I have an API 2500, fatso and Adesigns nail and something else expensive but Im worried I shouldn't use them on the 2 bus until I spend 5 grand on converters...

2. The behringer verb is as good as the bricasti and... POSTED MP3 SAMPLES! The best is many posters are applauding his attempt to "mix it up"... But then they instantly disagree with his findings. They are encouraging ignorant trolling as usual. I love the M7 cause its so expensive it pisses people off!

3. Protools has a mid hump which gives it a nice midrange clarity.

4. If you wear glasses during mixing will you suffer from the reflections off your glasses...?

I admit Ive talked a lot of shit on gearslutz prior, but I wouldn't have the time to respond to sooooooo many ridiculous threads...

So in closing I would like to describe the typical GS mix session-

So my Bricasti went down and I was lucky enough to have a Behringer verb on hand- whew! I just made some tweeks and voila- exactly the same. The clarity the verb now presented showed me I could hear the cheap 192 converters on my main bus... So I removed the fatso, api2500, adesigns nail and eq inserts so the conversion to analog would no longer affect my bus signal. Strangely there was still something interfering with my beautiful protools midrange, like tape but much better, and I realized it was the reflections off my glasses! I had been struggling with this mix for 2 weeks and all the time it wasn't me or my skill- it was those damn glasses! So though I can no longer identify faders or see most ANYTHING, my mix sounds amazing! Sadly I can't find the folder I saved it in... Can I put my glasses on when the mix isn't playing?

Thats my favorite... 2nd is the protools mid range comment- you should see them debate it...

But Ive been working with real humans on actual projects, too busy for the internet other than my fish tank build... priorities, and to come back, log in and see that was just too much...

Glasses ruining mixes. Holy fucking sheep shit.

Anyone read Issac Asimov Foundations????

OR see the movie idiocracy... yep.

Okay, yes.  Gearslutz is ridiculous. But have you never put on a hat and noticed a change in sound?

What are you talking? Hats with a brim? How wide? Fedora, Cowboy, or Sombrero? Oops, almost forgot Bowler. What about baseball caps? Worn normally, homey, or catcher style? Does a beret change anything? How 'bout those beanies with the propellers on them?  Felt, straw, or wool? Someone do a shoot out.

Oh, don't get me started on the acoustic properties of hair lacquers & aftershaves. Those audiophiles are wasting their time on cables when they can't even manage a euphonic hairstyle.

Aftershave? Crap, I haven't even thought about that. What if I don't shave? What is the appropriate beard length for mixing?

If that isn't a name for a band, I have NO IDEA what is!

And the mohawk for stereo imaging and soul patch for R&B... Holy crap.

I had one ear pierced many years ago... I now wonder if that was why I couldn't get any mixes/tracks sold... Earring reflections screwing with my stereo frequencies- the left side always sounded a little brighter- ESPECIALLY if I wore a hoop and not a stud.

Also- dont forget not to SMILE during mixing... all those teeth are a reflective nightmare!

Here's the truth with all this hairstyle/hat/glasses goofiness.

The shape of your noggin and your outer ears contribute DIRECTLY to what you perceive as normal sound.  If you change these things, you will hear differently.
Wearing a hat changes how things sound, and since I don't usually wear a hat, I choose to not wear it when I have to listen closely.

I suppose that if one wears glasses, depending on the size of the frames, it could have some effect on what they hear, but if they wear them regularly, they're used to how the world sounds with them on.

So really, it's not THAT ridiculous.

While every other item on that list shows certain ridiculousness, I agree with Kyle- I hear differently with my glasses on vs. off, & as someone who wears them about half the time, I usually mix with them off.  Unless of course I need to see the meters on some piece of outboard more than a few feet away.

Actually guys- its is absolutely ridiculous.

If wearing glasses is negatively affecting your mix- you suck. Literally SUCK as an engineer and should quit.

The people defending this are just internet debaters. Glasses do NOT screw your mix up. If you REALLY think putting glasses on screws the mix up- you are not a real engineer. Or at least you dont get much legit work. PERIOD.

Its sad when something so stupid is defended like its a REAL consideration...

If you want to argue that there is a potential for the glasses to affect a sound wave- OF COURSE THATS TRUE... BUT- to say it negatively affects your ability to critically listen- your are 100% full of shit.

The whole internet Jedi thing is completely out of control.

In closing- if you defend this concept "glasses adversely affect mix" you are an idiot and lying about being a real recording engineer for a living.

Period.

Seriously.

Bullshit.

I call shennanigans...

The defenders should go log into gearslutz where bullshit is the food of the day...

So Joseph, you're a troll now?

No one here ever said that glasses or hats will make or break a mix. But they can affect your decisions, even if only slightly. And considering the amount of thought and effort that goes into that last 1%, I don't think it's ridiculous to consider what impact one's personal effects can have on the process.

Just because YOU can't hear a difference, doesn't mean there isn't one.  It just means you have a tin ear.  But what do I know, I'm a non-professional idiot and a liar.
