After you get the top off, can you pull the capsule out (are the internal wires long enough) or do you have to take the back plate off and unsolder the wires before replacing the foam? Or will the backplate slide out too?

The shockmounts for RE-20's are supposed to swivel, but the little thumbscrew eventually works its way loose and the mic crashes onto the broadcast console and breaks off a fader.  Mad  Any suggestions for immobilizing the thumbscrew? Loctite?

I've just done one of these. You do need to take off the backplate, but it's not hard. Follow the photo tutorial earlier in the thread - it's really helpful.

Our RE-20 gave us troubles.  Fine on quiet things but distorting on any serious levels.   So, we called EV and asked for a quote.  Someone on one of these boards said they were easy to deal with and expecting such we gave them a ring.   They said they wanted $250 to LOOK AT THE MIC and, they would tell us what was going on before any work proceeded.  The $250 would go towards the repair costs, but the labor could go past that.  Shipping both ways was on us.

?

Fortunately, I found a gentleman at micdaddy.com from Lincoln, Nebraska, who quoted me $159.   We shipped him the mic, he fixed it blew a new powder coat, baked it and had it back to me in days.  The mic sounds wonderful again.   So, I give micdaddy.com a hearty well done if your RE-20 needs some love.

However, I saw this thread about "micdaddy's" services- specifically post #8:
https://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/897053-micdaddy-com-ev-mic-repair.html

It is not easy to determine the veracity of the claims in the quoted thread, but I thought that there were enough complaints of a similar nature that it warranted a notice here, so that the previous post of recommendation for this service provider can be viewed in the context of the experience of others.
