RE-20 Repair
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:53:34 PM »

I have a couple of old RE20's that need fixin' up.
Both were kind of rattling around, one had no output.
As I hoped, the one with no output just had a broken wire at the capsule.

The question is, what was used to suspend the inner workings of the mic within the body?

It's all pretty much dust now.

Thanks!

Hi Bill,

I'd give EV a call. The mics are still in production and the foam inserts should still be available.

Ok. So it's just foam.
Your suggestion is great.
Which explains why I didn't think of it.
Thank you!

Request a price from EV before any work is carried out.

I recently 'sent away' a couple of time-degraded 20s merely requesting repairs, and they came back beautifully done...but the bill was much larger than I would have ever expected.

Know what you are getting into beforehand.

The RE20 I had repaired by EV last year cost $200 plus shipping.

Sometimes EV (or whatever they're called today) will sell you the necessary foam to "do it yourself."
You want to make sure you carefully clean out all of the old foam residue before replacing it with the new stuff.
The hardest part is getting the mini allen wrench to open up the mic.
Some people I know also have made their own foam inserts.
Radio stations have dozens of these mics in use daily.
For some reason, the foam in some of them deteriorates rather quickly.
On the other hand, I've seen some 20 plus year old models where the foam is as good as new.

I was under the impression that the foam liner was available as a service part.

The hardest part is getting the mini allen wrench to open up the mic.

It's 0.035", which is roughly equal to 0.9 mm.

This is strictly DIY. Both mics disassembled already.

Found this info in a previous thread here which was very timely, thank-you!

Even knowing the size getting the wrench was not easy. Most normal tool sources (around here, anyway) don't carry them this small.

Hope it helps.
I've replaced foam to two Re20's no more than a couple months ago.
Just to mention, get in touch with your EV dealer(texim here in Italy),they've sent me parts in a week.
If U need,I can search and double check invoice, but from memory it's around Euro 40,00 for the three part(78233,78231).

After you get the top off, can you pull the capsule out (are the internal wires long enough) or do you have to take the back plate off and unsolder the wires before replacing the foam? Or will the backplate slide out too?

The shockmounts for RE-20's are supposed to swivel, but the little thumbscrew eventually works its way loose and the mic crashes onto the broadcast console and breaks off a fader.  Mad  Any suggestions for immobilizing the thumbscrew? Loctite?

I've just done one of these. You do need to take off the backplate, but it's not hard. Follow the photo tutorial earlier in the thread - it's really helpful.

Our RE-20 gave us troubles.  Fine on quiet things but distorting on any serious levels.   So, we called EV and asked for a quote.  Someone on one of these boards said they were easy to deal with and expecting such we gave them a ring.   They said they wanted $250 to LOOK AT THE MIC and, they would tell us what was going on before any work proceeded.  The $250 would go towards the repair costs, but the labor could go past that.  Shipping both ways was on us.

?

Fortunately, I found a gentleman at micdaddy.com from Lincoln, Nebraska, who quoted me $159.   We shipped him the mic, he fixed it blew a new powder coat, baked it and had it back to me in days.  The mic sounds wonderful again.   So, I give micdaddy.com a hearty well done if your RE-20 needs some love.

However, I saw this thread about "micdaddy's" services- specifically post #8:
https://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/897053-micdaddy-com-ev-mic-repair.html

It is not easy to determine the veracity of the claims in the quoted thread, but I thought that there were enough complaints of a similar nature that it warranted a notice here, so that the previous post of recommendation for this service provider can be viewed in the context of the experience of others.
