I will admit that the times I've done phantom-power-less sessions I have really enjoyed the results.  The Beyer 160, Sennheiser 431 and EV RE20 would be on my list, too.

Phantom powerless sessions... they're great... especially when you have a bunch of KM-54's / 65's; M-221b's with some 48's, C-12's and M-269's involved!!!

I think the last two sessions I've done have been phantom powerless.  I couldn't be happier.
