IMP question for you guys
« on: June 28, 2010, 03:20:44 PM »

is there anything specific you guys would like to see happen with the IMPs?

recently they have all been "rock" songs.  is that still ok?

seriously, let me know what you're thinking.  not saying i can do anything, but i'd certainly like to see how i might be able to better serve you guys with the IMPs

I'll take whatever, honestly.

What I'd like to request instead of a genre is more in-depth knowledge transfer.  I know we're all busy people, but if one or two of the mixers whose work seems to rise to the top could explain, in detail, some of the outstanding elements of their mix, I think I'd enjoy IMP more - and get more out of it.

I'm in the middle of a pop-punk-electronica mix project (and that is WAY outside my comfort zone) and I am really starting to second guess myself.  I'd love to learn more, hands-on, and IMPs seem like a place to do it.

Higher track counts.

Stuff with 16-20 tracks is fine, but not really representative of much that's out there in the commercial world (in my experience, obviously everything is context dependent..).

+1.

Also, I always learn a great deal from salvage jobs.  80 tracks of total crap would be a fun challenge.

I'm working on a couple that I have in mind for future IMP's ... These won't be finished until next month at the earliest:

1. - Female fronted Metal in the vein of Parkland Drive or perhaps Under Oath (screamo)... but the female "growler" is pleasant enough to listen to... Female drummer on this one too!

2. - Male Punk Pop in the vein of All Time Low or Boys Like Girls (commercial grid/tuned pop)... track counts rising daily: 25+ Vocal tracks, 20+ guitar tracks with ear candy and synths yet to be added... prolly exceeding 60-70 tracks when done..

Both very tight (gridded) productions.

Lemme nough

BUT for now anything you have is good with me Smile

I'd like to see higher track counts too. And frankly, I'd like to see higher SR/bit rate files, but I realize that wouldn't be fair to some of the people who enjoy participating but maybe can't work with HD. Maybe a project where both a standard resolution AND a high resolution version is provided? That might be an interesting comparison in and of itself.

I've got HD2 myself, and I hate working at anything higher than 48k.  The system just "lags".  I do notice a minor difference in overall sonic character when working at 88.2 though, I have to say.  Sucks that it's a pain to work at that sample rate.

I agree however, that it would be an interesting comparison of those who mix at the lower sample rate, compared to those who mixed at the higher sample rate.  Although, the whole purpose of IMP is to remove variables and everybody mix the same tracks.  I'm on the fence on that one.

I know it may not be popular, but why not something more electronic? Or on the other hand some jazz/swing? Even free jazz? It may not be exactly alternative rock music, but it's worth getting to know how to deal with it at mix time.

Rock is Fine
Higher track counts OK as I think I'll do it Digital with HDSP Madiface into a  Digico SD8.. Kinda Live gig setup but sounds really good.

I really enjoy the rock, but any musical style is fine for me..  I had a go at the Fletcher "IMP/Discussion" country number from a whiles back that Keith posted, which was something I don't get to try often (everything all played and miked together in the one room live).  That was a new bag of challenges, but it was great fun trying to sit it all together.

As Grantis said, no matter what the track is, I like the fact that everyone has the same baseline and comes out all different places.. its a great way to prove how much I have to learn, and learn a great deal in the process.  Looking forward to it.

I am of the camp of liking the opportunity to get a variety of styles. That said, each time I manage to get to do one of these mixes, regardless of style, I learn a TON about the types of tracks, problems and nut-and-bolt methods that come up in mixing. I really appreciate this board and want to thank J and everyone who contributes and gives feedback on each others mixes. The ear count on these mixes is unparalleled as far as education goes.

Cheers!

A few things that I've been thinking about...

Personally, I like songs that is a more of a production/creative challenge, like 9, 10, 12, 15 & 18 for example. Nothing wrong with a plain rock song, but the two are very different exercises imho.

I agree that a high trackcount is preferable.

To get the critique/feedback thread going we could just agree to comment on the previous 5-10 mixes in the submission thread. That way it becomes a less daunting task when we're dealing with 20-30 mixes.

All the best,

Stefan

Apologies if this isn't the right place for this, but I'd love to partake in the next IMP. Unfortunately the 'http://www1.prosoundweb.com/imp' link isn't working for me, giving me an error 310 message saying there are too many redirects. Sad Is this because there's no IMP atm or is it my browser? In case of the latter, I use Chrome and have also used IE but to no avail.

Thanks in advance!

it would be nice to have small teams of people who will just review their own small groups mixes.

one of my least favorite parts about imp is that we post a song once, people give you a horribly vague statement followed by the end of the event. it would make more sense to let people post their fixes and have their team critique again. i believe this would help all of our mixes. any one else agree?

...just spitballin'.

I think the exact same thing. Small groups and the possibility to make 1 correction.
I know I usually go back and change things based on feedback.

also, J.

i have a song with 48 tracks ready to go. all i would need to do is send you a zip file and for you to upload.

if you need a sample i can send you one.

but this is a song i did for the womb, and i thought it turned out kinda cool.

yeah man, send me an mp3.

i think the small groups of reviews will be easy, can't we just review all the mixes on the page you posted on in the submission thread?

we typically end up with 3 pages of submissions.  every one reviews "their" own page.

We'd have to make sure everyone's preferences are set to display the same # of pages.. mine is set to display the maximum allowed cuz I prefer scrolling over clicking.. not a big issue, but thought I'd better mention it in case.

The setting is at the top of the page at:   User CP / Settings / Messages Per Page

I think a better idea wil be to make groups of 10 people. The first 10 uploaders are one group, next 10 uploaders are the next group, and etc.

I said 10 as an example, choose any number of people you like.

This would probably get way out of hand with resubmitting your mix, but a recall is "real world". (This was mentioned earlier)

A second submission deadline after the critiques to see if the mixer can deliver what the "clients" want.

I'm just thinking outloud. With so many different opinions, how would one make everyone happy? What if a handful of guys were the "client"... The final word after critiques that judge recalls? Each guy gets like 5 mixers to work with.

Once again, just thinking outloud because you asked. Big can of worms, I know.

5 seems like a good number of people per group to me.

i also think a second deadline a week after the initial due date might be enough time to listen to the others and tweeze our own mixes.

Good point rankus. All of our settings would have to be the same. We just need to decide on somethin and and all set the same settings, yeah?

This means we have to be strict on the deadline.

I like the idea of groups, if we can get it organized!
