Just about to get myself into mastering a RAP CD. I had the client send me an audio disc of the mixes along with a CD of an artist on a label to use as a reference.
The mixes sounded a little hyped in the high mids and a little weak on the bottom. I checked the ref CD and it sounded better but still had the same basic sound to it.
So, I ran some FFTs on tunes from both discs and I just couldn't believe what I saw...!! The graph was almost perfectly FLAT most of the way across the spectrum! There was a bump around 200Hz and a gentle roll-off starting about 3k but everything else is just about like west Texas. I'm talking every freq sitting at the same dB level on the FFT graph...
Oddly enough, RMS levels aren't too bad - its not slammin' hot or anything. But the EQ curve....????
Is this a new way to hear everything else in the spectrum louder (since its basically at the same level as the bottom end)? Or is this just the current trend in EQ balance?
Anyone else?
