You Don't Know Jack...and Daking?
« on: April 27, 2010, 08:09:43 AM »

Neither here nor there...but...

I was watching "You Don't Know Jack" on cable last night, and there was a scene where Dr. Jack Kavorkian was being interviewed on a radio program.  In the background, I was somewhat astonished to see a rack full of Daking gear.

2 of the FET Compressors.
2 of the Mic Pre EQ's.
1 of the Mic Pre IV units.

And I thought....that can't be historically accurate...can it?

The interview had to be early to mid 1990's, so that would probably have to put this radio station on the Daking train VERY early, no?  And I'm not even sure all of those units were in production yet.

It just gave me a chuckle.

Now...there are other pieces of gear plainly visible in that rack that I'm not familiar with.  I wonder if others of you have seen that, and if any of those pieces are in the wrong decade.

I'm gonna say the first Daking stuff I saw was in the mid nineties.

I'm not sure if this is a fiction movie, or what...?

But if it is, then it can be in NO way as bad as '24-hour party people', where they had Martin Hannett working on an Otari MTR-90 and an Amek/Langley Recall... back in the 1970's.

-There were DOZENS of others; the absolute lack of historical accuracy was consistent. -I just accepted that only geekish fools such as I would ever notice.

Keith

PS: I loved Andy Sirkin's Hannett.

You expected them to rebuild Strawberry for one scene?  The Hacienda reconstruction was pretty amazing though.

I didn't expect them to rebuild strawberry, but... the anachronisms were a bit too much for me.

I recently saw a re-run of the TV show "The Patridge Family" and in this particular episode (from 1970) they were in "the studio" cutting a record.. in the rack next to the engineer were three UA 1176 bluestripes and four Pultecs...

I knew there was a reason for that show being so popular.

No.  It's not historically accurate (there were a couple of KRK Rokits too).
Just a made-for-tv movie.

I agree Terry, I was fortunate enough to have seen it in the theatre at a local film festival and although it was heavy on "story" and light on the technical aspects some may crave I thought it was an amazing indy film.

Twas truly an eye opener on how the biz has and continues to work.

Here's a band Hannett didn't record at Strawberry:

PS. Ever catch that Jackson 5 biopic that airs on VH1? It shows a portrayal of the session for "I'll Be There," (1970) which they are recording on a Studer 800.

So sad - just look at the gaps in what started out as a stunning CV.

The sonic atmosphere on 'Unknown Pleasures'is so unique.
