I split this off so anyone interested could see it and vote. We have 18 votes so far and it looks like LCR might win out. If you're interested in building this EQ (I already have a PCB manufacturer lined up), vote for LCR or Baxandall...

If passive means "passive with makeup gain", then I'm for passive LCR. There are tons of active eqs around we can buy. I'm interested in trying out Dan Kennedy's latest one, but very few of the old-style passives that sound any good.

Well, passive filters. Will surely have buffered in and out, and possibly buffer stages between the filters to insure no interaction. Passive is not the right term, but as the filtering is done passively, I'm callin' it passive (or LCR)...

Allright you sons-a-bitches, lets make an eq.

Not passive agressive, more like passive active.

Probably no need to stray from the tried-and-true 600 Ohm network, as seen in mucho other designs that people like.

We'll start with a 990 on the input, since you need some drive capability.  A little gain available, but nothing illegal.  Well, in some states.

Next we turn to pg. 277 of the Audio Cyclopedia.  Hey, I'll do a little hand-holding here, but some books will be needed.

And for cosmetic gain, either another 990 or 2520.  Purists can always make a little jig to substitute an IC opamp.

Two peaking bands (it's not a Phish concert) sounds about right.

30, 60, 120, 240 on the bottom.

3k, 5k, 7k, 15k on the top.

You can put a Q control if you want, but it can cause problems.

That's a lot of inductors right there, but not too much circuit complexity, with a PC board and instructions.

You sure you don't want a nice negative feedback eq?  It costs 10 times less, works fine, been a part of my chain for many moons...

I guess you're looking for some of that inductor sound, though.

Right, so anyone that has the aforementioned book and a copy of SPICE -- or even just a black piece of paper and abacus -- start putting it in and doing some basic basics.  I'll bet B-rad even has a way to post a netlist and calculated curves for us.

What an enigma...

So Dave, did you register a vote in there for active for us "active" heads? Looks close, but we're trailing.
