Vintage Design M581+ what for drums?
« on: March 23, 2010, 10:22:36 PM »

I have this pre and need more to record a drum kit. I also have an SM7, SM57 and CAD M179 for mics. Would three mics be enough? I want to try 3 or 4. I want to get a lunchbox going but the budget is tight so I was thinking a couple OSA pre's. any suggestions?

Do you only have one preamp?

I've gotten cool sounds with one microphone before.

It can be done with some clever positioning.

Hi!
Well, I also have a Brick but wanted to maybe sell it and get a couple more 500 series. I think a three mic setup would work? I just wanted info on the best use of my mics and which other two pre's might be best. Thanks!

Hell ya - you can use three mics on drums.

What is the dynamic of the drummer in question?

I love three mic drums sounds. I don't like making more work for myself, but it all depends on what I am recording.

One Above the Drummer, to the Floor side of him, and in front of the kick drum, lined up correctly is really excellent.

This all varies, with the drummer and the performance though,

EDIT: you can use your preamps and microphones wherever you feel they are best.
