Sadly, it's not a joke.  It's a real post from <another unnamed forum>.

I knew that, I just figured it was somebody stirring the pot.

I'm amazed that that wasn't the case.

If I may point out the obvious, J.J.'s posting is not about the worthiness of one make of U87 versus another.  It is about its owner not understanding what the high pass filter on the mic actually does.  And then not understanding what the high pass filter on the preamp does.  Then the owner wants "professional guidance" to tell him what he should do because he can't make an aesthetic decision for himself.

The point of the posting being then, "why do people purchase gear they can't appreciate or understand?"

Barry

Further to this.

Why is it that in a forum which has members with the skills and experience that one could almost imagine they could make a decent recording by hand scratching a groove on a piece of vinyl with a rusty nail, do threads so often descend into being an exchange about which piece of expensive vintage gear is great and how xxx sounds like shit?

Then you all seem surprised when someone just starting out asks a question along the lines of "what XXXX do I need to make my recordings sound more YYYY?". What fools these youngsters are to think it's all about the gear! Where could the possibly get that idea?

(As for the original post, I agree it seems silly to have such expensive gear and not have the first clue about how to use it, but maybe daddy's rich).

I just had a tracking engineer (that I did a mix for) ask me if it was possible to deliver a 24bit version to the mastering house.  He said since he had no idea what that was he asked me to verify if it was possible.

1. I said yes since it was recorded and mixed at 24bit.

2.  I would have said no if it was recorded at 16bit and that woulda been a fun conversation.

If smart bombs only left smart people standing I wonder how many people would be left.

But surely if it's a mix it's not 'in bits' Wink

I have many similar stories but it makes my heart heavy just thinking about them never mind recounting them....

Doctor, it hurts when I do this...

No shit.  "It sounds bad when I use the high-pass filter."

Well, don't use the high-pass filter.
