SR71 - (Larry Janus version)
« on: March 08, 2010, 08:20:56 PM »

I've had a SR71 in operation here for coming up on two weeks. I'll have more specific things to add when I get time to put it together in my head. I will get out it out of the way and tell you that when available, I'm buying one. I've been mostly mixing at the moment so thats where more of my experience is with it, but I've had some tracking dates interspersed in the middle of this record, in two very different styles of music, and so I've had a chance to track with it on some different things too.

For this record, it is living on the mix bus. Its an organic all acoustic record I tracked a few months back with fantastic, fantastic players and fantastic tones recorded. The comp is not altering the tone in ANY negative way and is working the dynamics incredibly. Often when I have a mix bus compressor it provides a great deal of flavor, on top of working the dynamics. This does something different. Its very musical and three dimensional. Its fair to say that this is partly responsible for how great this record is sounding. If I were to have to give it back before I was finished mixing this, I would be bereft. That said, I asked Larry to start building mine. You know, it reminds me of the extra goodness I got when I had my U73's here. They sadly are not with me right now, since they are sick and being reworked. I don't know where this thing is going next. But I hope I get to hang on to it a bit longer or mine is finished when it leaves. I'll put together the warts and all review later.

Its worth demoing.

Best,
joshua

Josh, do you have UTCs in that one or the Sowters?

They say the heart of Rock & Roll is still beating, which is amazing if you consider all the blow it's done over the years.

"The Internet enables pompous blowhards to interact with other pompous blowhards in a big circle jerk of pomposity." - Bill Maher

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

Hey bud. This one has Sowters. I was prepared to poo poo it. As I said I am going to buy one of these. I may A/B test mine when I get it with one channel UTC for giggles. But the reality is the thing sounds damn good. Cool knees and liquid sound. I would be very, very curious to get your opinion of it after you check it out. . .

Having just finished an album with the SR-71 on the whole band, I can say how much I'm liking how it sounds.

Full and rich with lots of depth, and without any feeling of being 'retro' or phonied up.

Just a high quality compressor in its own right.

I've emailed Larry my few little nit picks, mostly ergonomic choices, but this is a great piece of gear.

I hate you for posting this, as I've almost completely convinced myself I'd have zero need for one of these and shouldn't waste anyone's time trying it out...

Honestly, just seeing it opened up is worth the time.

Then you plug it in.

I've been a fan of these for a long time. Only waiting on a government stimulus check to buy one!
