Does anyone else here generally prefer the bass work of all-around good musicians to that of bass specialists? Lifer bass player culture--what with all its superfluous strings, hideous instruments made of too many exotic trees, and Chapman Stick dalliances--just leaves me puzzled.

Yup... trying to think of any great bassists that i personally know that aren't adequate on a number of instruments.  Come to think of it; it's scary when anyone is too tied to the instrument itself and not music as a whole.

Howbout Shuggie Otis?

Justin Currie of Del Amitri, I thought was always underrated as a bass player, as he was always probably known as a singer/ songwriter first. He's always doing something interesting and playing something different than the root note of the melody.

I love Colin Moulding as well, too bad about XTC but oh well. I'll also mention Dee Murray who played bass on most of  Elton John's good albums.

I'll "thumbs up"  that one as well.  I did a few sessions with him in the late 80s when he lived in Nashville. Very melodic in that McCartney kinda way and  a really really nice guy.

That's it!  Thanks for finding that.

Herbie Flowers was session bass and tuba on an album I was doing at that time (B. A. Robertson), and he was constantly laughing about that monkey riding the bike...he would come out with "Can you ride tandem?" mimicking the accent, about once every half hour.

Great guy, awesome player, definitely underrated.

Yes. But he's hardly underrated.
Guys like Levin and Sklar are really stars.
At least among musicians.

But this is all really subjective, isn't it?

Good sense is, of all things among men, the most equally distributed; for everyone thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that those even who are the most difficult to satisfy in everything else, do not usually desire a larger measure of this quality than they already possess.

I definitely agree about Deacon and Colin Moulding. It's too bad that Colin and Andy aren't speaking.

I had no idea those 2 were on bad terms?

Too bad - they've been one of my 'desert island' bands for a VERY long time...

Percy Jones? Tony Levin?

DF

I'm sure being a Stick and bass player has helped me, as I got to master Levins last two albums and Jones latest one (which I think is about to be released).

Tony is a personal friend and all around great guy. btw... he'll play on anybodies project (just contact him).  Same with Jerry (Marotta).

Somebody mentioned Chris Hillman as well and I'm going to be mastering his next record if all goes well... just missed doing his last one.

Small world.

As for underrated I wouldn't put Levin in that category.

However, I would put Jack Daily in this category.  Jack played with Lenny Kravitz for most of his career but most of you guys probably have seen/heard him with Cindy in those Volkswagon commercials.  He's played with everyone from Michael Jackson to Josh Stone (who he is with now). Just a monster bass player.  Underutilized with Kravitz as Lenny was such a control freak... if Jack got to shine on those records I think they would have been so much better... same with Cindy.
