To those who author SACDs
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:32:46 PM »

Is there a way of avoiding those annoyingly expensive and increasingly out-of-stock AIT tapes to send CMs? Do any plants accept the data any other way? Or is everyone (all 3 of you) still sending AITs?

I am still sending Cutting Masters on AIT-1 tape. Some plants may be able to accept a UCMF on DVD-R or electronically, though we haven't pursued that route here yet. I do store a UCMF for the archives though.

Yes, the AIT tapes are expensive (and all tape media will soon be obsolete) but it's a tiny part of the SACD production and authoring costs.

Thanks David, I was hoping you'd chime in. I must admit UCMF has largely passed me by. I assume that it's more than just the DST CM files?
I guess I should inquire whether plants accept it. 50 Euro per tape isn't the world, but it buys a nice meal for two...

How do you generate UCMF images from a CM?

UCMF is, loosely, the equivalent of a DDP file set for SACD. There used to be a link on the Sonic Studio site for a free Sony utility for PC that could convert between Sony and Phillips disc images, AIT CM, and UCMF.

If you send me a reminder off list I'll check if I still have the installer.

Don't you pass media costs on to the client?

Mail sent. Thanks so much for the offer!

The pure authoring jobs are offered at a fixed rate here, media included. Saving a few bucks isn't the only reason I'm looking for options. For one thing, as you said, first generation AIT media is gonna die out sooner or later. Then I recently had a tape returned from the plant even though it passed loadback & QC here, so reliably is not 100% it seems. Then there's shipping delay. All of which could be avoided by FTPing files. Works great with our DVD-A masters. I shall give the plant a call tomorrow and ask.

Hi,

I use UCMF on DVD-R for almost all SACD projects now. No problems so far, including Sonopress and Sony Austria.

To be extra careful, I do download the UCMF (rar compressed) from wherever I've already uploaded it and do both a bit-level compare with my source and a compare within the Sony CMF converter tool that David mentioned.

Best Regards,

That's excellent. Most of my masters go to those two. Thanks!

Hi Robin,
I haven't sent out an ait tape in 2 years or so.
UCMF on DVDR or ftp is working fine.
Sonopress is more complicated with ftp but it's possible.
Sony DADC can handle ftp transfers without problems.

For ftp I always pack in .rar files of 700MB and include the MD5 checksum of the unpacked files inside the archive.

Edit: I am especially careful to check with the plant when I am uploading something or sending.
Customer services aren't always aware of SACD and this easily causes confusion or delay.

Are customers aware of SACD?

I went to a couple of local computer stores and bought all the AIT tape they were getting rid of at pennies on the dollar.

AIT as well as UCMF via ftp here as well.

(guess that's a  3 of us)

Like Graemme, I haven't sent out an AIT tape in almost 3 years. UCMF is great, the only issue is when you get a disk that is just larger than the DVD-r allows. We've had terrible luck with the dual layer discs.

Wow, that makes 5 of us authoring SACDs! Who would've thought...

Thanks for all that information (and thanks for the support off list). This will save me money and time in the future. How very useful this forum is!

What about 25GB Blu-ray discs for data delivery then?

So let's make it half a dozen!
We're still doing SACD authoring 1 or 2 times a year...
The last masters we sent out on AIT and DVD-R as a safety.

Cheers
