80's electric guitar sounds...
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:15:45 PM »

It's time to bring them back!  I like the fresh, clear, 80's electric guitar sounds.  It makes me feel like it's morning in America.  We need to get rid of this Nu Metal overcompressed chugga chugga shit.  Is it time to repopularize the JC-120?

Aside from the lack of chorus (boo hoo) is there anything an AC30 couldn't do better than that amp?

Maybe sounding thin... but wait, I've heard AC30s do that as well.

I have a mint JC120 for you if you are seeking one!

Ac30 does not do "Cold" as well     Cure etc.    I agree with you Nelson  and AC30 is a fav

I made the mistake of buying a JC120 when I was a teen, in a way, I can thank it for leading me to the V4 that I bought next.

The JC120 has, perhaps, the worst onboard distortion I've ever heard. Mine did have a paisley grill cloth though.

Sadly, I don't have that Ampeg anymore. I think I'd give Nicholas the Roland, if I still had it.

My complaint with eighties guitar sounds isn't the JC120. They're good for what they're good for and not good for much else.

What I have no desire to ever hear ever again is that super shimmery Lace Sensor sound.

Lace Sensors do not sound "shimmery."

Townshend, Clapton, Beck.

Nothing "shimmery" about their tones.

AC30 or Fender twin, Ampeg etc... ANYTHING before a JC120!

PS:  Robert Smith of the Cure uses two Ampeg VL503 1x12 combos in stereo.  Details on his rig here:

The info about the video might be the best part.

And JC120s are awesome at ONE THING.  And for most, are probably worth the $300 they now go for just to keep around to do that one thing every couple of years.

And Rankus, since when is guitargeek.com an authoritative source on anything?

True that Podgorny.  But being a long term Cure fan I can say that I have seen very few references to him using JC120's (although he has done on occasion) The one thing that has been fairly consistent is his use of BOSS Chorus pedals... perhaps the key to his sound?

This excerpt from 1996 SOS article:

Quote:

ROBERT SMITH (GUITAR, BASS, LEAD VOCALS, KEYBOARDS): AKG C12 mic; Ampeg Combo SVT112; Banjo (5 string); Boss effects pedals; Coral Sitar guitar; Emu Emulator II; Fender 6 string bass; Fender Jazzmaster; Gibson Chet Atkins ltd edition guitar; Gibson SG custom guitar; Gretsch Tennessee Rose guitar; Jen Cry Baby Wah Wah pedal; Marshall Bluesbreaker combo; Mosrite guitar; Ovation 12 string guitar; PHD custom guitar; Sitar; Takamine 12 string acoustic guitar; Takamine 6 string acoustic guitar; Vox AC30 ammp; Yairi Classical guitar

The whole article here:  http://www.musicfanclubs.org/cure/press/I31.html

Scroll to the bottom for the complete session gear list

On a recent session over here, chasing his tone, we came close with a Gretch gtr, two AC30's and a stereo BOSS Chorus pedal... but what do I know? hah
