Mic Pres
« on: January 11, 2010, 08:49:36 PM »

I've got the Echo Layla3G. I don't think the built in preamps will be good for dynamic mics. Am I right about that? If not I need pres that will work well with the SM57s and possibly AKG 112. Any suggestions? MultiStrip Preamps or singles? I've read the Tweakheadz article. Still a little unsure.

The Echo Layla3G mic preamps have 58 dB of gain. Should be more than enough for drums.

*Edit* sorry just realized this is a bit off topic since the question was a bout mic pres...

Why are the built is pre's not good for dynamics?

KM 84 is great (mine needs a new capsule though Sad ), my AKG 451 E's are lovely too. However there's a price tag attached with those mics.

But if someone wants a condenser mic on a budget (budget forum here) your choices might be a Rode NT5 as Terry Manning has recommended in the past. I've tried this mic a few times with good results, but I prefer my 451's.

I've also used the Kel HM-1 on snare during a live club recording last year. The only thing with the Kel is you can't bring it over the rim. The Kel doesn't have that edgy high end.

Note Williams position on the mic in his pic.

The 55's are the same capsule but with pad and rolloff.

84's are truly great, and have that -10 pad...snares can sometimes be loud.

To veer further off topic...

Just noticed the NT-55 has a low cut filter as well.
