Quick ? for digi 003r
« on: December 27, 2009, 11:54:01 AM »

I'm currently using the preamps on my digi003r and Firemax for tracking in the studio, but I need to be able to do ear monitoring for the musicians. The Firemax has direct outs that I can patch through a console and use Aux outs until I get a Hearback system or something of the same Nature. But can I do the same thing with the 8 outputs on the Digi003r as I do with the Firemax?

Well, technically, you could, but you'd have to create aux channels in PT to use with outputs 3-8.  Outs 1-2 are obviously already used for your monitoring.

It's probably easier to just use your console.

Well I know in protools it says I'm using outs 1&2 but I'm coming out of the Left & Right outputs in the control room. There are 8 individual outs on the back of the 003r. So are you saying I have to use Aux tracks to route them to the 8 outs? And if so, are you also saying I really only get 6 outs? Thats kind of a bogus deal for Digi.
I'd prefer not using the console because that would require using the pres on the console and those aren't anywhere near good for recording.

Yes, Monitor L-R is simply Outputs 1-2 with a volume control.

It's not bogus, it's the same with everyone else's hardware.

I pretty much sure this is not the case. Their are two monitor outputs, plus eight for any other purpose.

The only downside is lack of low latency monitoring on these additional outputs.

Grant is talking about routing options, not about the physical number of 1/4" outputs.

Also, the phrase "any other purpose" is a little misleading because Monitor L&R will always be a mult of output 1 and 2.

From the manual:

"Monitor Level Control: These knobs control the volume of the Main and Alt Monitor Outputs. These outputs mirror Analog Outputs1–2, which correspond to outputs 1–2 in Pro Tools."

that latency is going to be the big deal though

no matter how you ROUTE it inside PTLE, the signal will be AFTER D-A and A-D

there's no direct audio out parallel path in the 002/003

You can get it down to 128 samples comfortably and 64 if you are careful and have a decent system.

There is also the ADAT outs, but then you need a hearback or similar.
