Chris,

Many times the converter clipping is in lieu of limiting (soft or otherwise). The concept is to shave off the top of transients with the converter which leaves the rest of the signal alone.

There are software limiters that are bit transparent below threshold. For instance, TC Electronic M6000, MD3 and MD4.

my ME of choice does not use a Mytek.  like i said earlier, his masters come back sounding different then my mixes in a good way, however, i'm no longer surprised by any level changes within the mix.  my method works for me, i'm just sharing it.

That's another option but as i said some prefer to clip the converter at the A to D stage over limiting. This isn't an always thing, just another option. I've heard it done well and well...

I understand, just clarifying

I guess for me, the level difference isn't enough to worry me if no other PROCESSING is involved

anyway, after about 35 years there, i am comfortable listening at Sterling and knowing what I'm going to like or not like

I've only once been terribly disappointed by a mastering job, and afterward, sent the project to our forum's own Brad Blackwood, where it came back sounding great.  I've since recommended his services to several people, and they've always been thrilled.

That being said, I've never attended a mastering session and left thinking "Wow, I could never do that!"...  It's a pretty straitforward process that requires a different mindset from tracking or mixing.  But it's not some black art.
