new macbook pro with snow leapard?
« on: December 15, 2009, 12:06:18 PM »

I just bought one of these last night. I wanted a new computer that wasn't a crash/freeze up master like every PC I've ever owned, and I've been curious about mac for a few years...so I finally own one.

Now, among other duties for it I want to be able to record live music and want a simple but high sound quality set up to start with, at least 2 tracks at a time. This thing has no PCI/PCIe slot. Has 1 Fire Wire 800 port and some USB 2.0 ports. What can I do here for inputs and monitoring? I also own an SPL MTC by the way. Would the Duet work with this new mac? Options?

thanks

I'd highly recommend the Metric Halo products.  High quality and extremely flexible.

Do Metric Halo interfaces not require FW400?  Or is there a way for them to work with FW800?

A very simple adapter cable works for these newer FW800 only machines.  Other than that, no other problems with plugging the device into FW800 ports.

I use my 003 ( FW 400 ) into my Macbook pro ( FW 800 ) with a cable FW400-FW800
whitout  any issue......

Duet rules if all you need is 2 channels. Great for monitoring as well

you will like the lack of crashing.  I also like the quick start-up time.  I think I regained a week out of my life per year by switching to mac and not waiting for the computer to boot up over 2.5 minutes.

If all you need is 2 channels, the Metric Halo has the ULN-2 option.

Yes, the Duet works nicely with the Macbook Pro.  Apogee ship it with both a firewire 400 and a firewire 800 to 400 cable, so you're set to go right out of the box.

I've been using the setup with Logic 9, and it's a nice system.  I will say that Logic 9 is buggier than any Windows software I've ever used, but that's a different story.  When it works, it's great.

Thanks all

I'll look into these interfaces mentioned above. More questions to follow most likely.

I use an apogee duet and it sounds great. I have found that using the headphone outs cranked up to hear over loud live music will crash the Duet (I think its the current draw over the firewire bus). it really burned me in a very important session out of town. now I ONLY record with my workstation based protools rig ONLY. I do use the laptop and duet in live mode through the Maestro software to use the preamps. sounds great. but I cant trust the laptop. and no one is going to convince me, Ive been burned. sorry.

To add, my new Macbook Pro, I'm wanting to be loaded up with Logic Studio at a later date. Are Logic & Snow Lepard on good speaking terms? My Mac has only Garage Band in it at the moment.
Secondly, looked at Metric Halo's site...$5.6Kish for ULN8...bloody hell! Ensemble is looking nice.
