Ok..so i have an APIA2D?
« on: November 19, 2009, 08:31:16 PM »

Hi Guys,

Maybe i don't deserve it but i now have the A2D!

I am trying to connect it to my MBox2 via SPDIF which is all fine.
I have gone into protools set up and specified the A2D as an external clock.

I go to a track and select SPDIF (Left) and though the APIA2D is picking up sound...i don't appear to hear anything from my headphones plugged in to my MBox2?

What haven't i connected? What am i missing?

Cheers,
Adam

Have you set your mbox to clock to the A2D?

I don't use pro tools so I'm not sure if the mbox and protools are controlled by the same setup.

Also are the mbox and A2D both set to the same sample rate?

Hi Adam,  It's good that you selected the A2D as the clock source.  I assume that their sample rates are set to the same value (I have tried selecting an external source with the DIGI002R and gotten a lock, even though PTLE was set for 88.2 and the external clock was set for 44.1! - It's a multiple, so I suppose that's why it synched.  But I had no playthrough...)  You might also want to go into the Input/Output menu and make sure that, if you're at 44.1 or 48 kHz Fs, your SPDIF inputs are on the digital channels.  I know that the DIGI002 puts SPDIF at 1xFs on channels 17 and 18.  But when you switch to 2xFS, the channels to use for SPDIF become 7 and 8, since the track count is halved.

The phones not playing might be a different issue... Do you also not see any input signal on the channel that is armed?

My simple approach to troubleshooting is "try everything," and then "try everything, again."  (;

Good luck,

Do you have the mix knob turned towards headphones?

Is it metering in Pro Tools?  Have you armed the track to record?

In your ProTools I/O Setups, is your optical input (not sure if MBox2 has one) set for S/PDIF or ADAT?  If it's set for S/PDIF, you might actually have set your track to input from optical, though you're hooked up via coax (or vice-versa).  Also, "S/PDIF Left" is a name given in the I/O setup screen, and could actually be hooked to any input.  Make sure that it is actually assigned to the S/PDIF inputs.

Some obvious stuff that may have been overlooked:
- Mic is plugged into the correct channel on the pre (1, I assume)?
- Track is record-enabled?
- Track fader is up, mutes and solos disengaged?
- Track output is correctly assigned?
- Does the A2D need to have its digital output enabled?
- MBox 2, I believe, has a max sample rate of 48 kHz.  Is your A2D set for the same sample rate as the session?

- Your S/PDIF cable is good?
- Are you sure PT is properly clocked?  Do you get bursts of noise on the track instead of audio?  This indicates clocks out of sync.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the help much appreciated! I had been offline for a bit...

I sorted the issue out. The A2D was initially set at a sample rate that didn't agree with the MBox2, subsequently correcting the sample rate didn't remedy the issue as it appears ProTools had already thrown a wobbly.

I had to reboot my machine to get it all working again.

Been enjoying it now though!!!
