Beach House Reverb
« on: November 10, 2009, 02:24:29 PM »

I've got a client who's gaga over the vocal reverb on Beach House's  "Gila".  Sounds like a plate with some significant predelay.  But I haven't been able to nail it (I use SIR).  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Definitely sounds like there are walls involved (Hall type verb)  and some short delay with lots of foldback (multiple short repeats)

And some possible plate on the bg vocal overdubs

yup.  slap delay with a healthy feedback is in there for sure.

sounds like it's on the 16th note.

the organ is pulsing on that same time so that helps make it feels deeper.

Definite slapback style short delay on the vocals in addition to 'verb.

Interesting to hear such a vintage reverb drench on something new.

Like this band - first time I've heard of them.. nice!

Maybe this was what Phil Spector wanted to do to Celine Dion's vox.

There is a hollow springiness in there too. No telling what they actually used, but Pianoverb by PSP has a midrange boxiness that could get you something similar when combined with a delay and hall to give it more length/diffusion.

It is free, here is the link

If you are in town that week I am having a Birthday party on the 6th (my 30th eek).
More than welcome.

Can't promise to introduce you to any multi-platinum selling rock musicians though!

Hello,

I recorded and mixed that album. I've lurked on this forum a long time and have learned a lot and am super excited by the nice comments here. That said..
The main reverb on "Gila" is an Eventide H3000, can't remember which patch I started with, but it was based on a big room with some modulation and a pre delay of about 220ms. The delay was a Korg SDD 1200, pretty sure I fed that to the reverb. Backing vocals went through a TC M3000, and were also sent together through a PA in the room, miced spaced omni and compressed healthily.  I recorded most of the main vocals with a Gefell UM92 and backing vocals with a beyer m160. No plug ins. But we did track to Pro Tools. Hope this helps. There is a picture of the room on our web site. If anyone wants to come to beautiful Baltimore to record, PM me for a PSW discount. Thanks...
