I've heard good things about the Mini Massive. You could use plug-ins for cuts and the mini for musical boosts.

Would like to compare the Sontec 250EX to a Sontec 432. Would definitely get the 250EX modded to have +-6dB gains though.

I'd grab an IBIS for about $3k

While I'm not recommending a DIY project, this may be of interest.

Thanks for that. Interesting circuit, reminds me of the Studer 169 EQ at the first look.

Good idea - but I thought street price on these was $4g's and it's pretty rare you see them on the used market.  A used Avalon 2055 might be another option.

a feature of the ibis that a lot of ppl ignore or don't tell about,
is the insert per band.

cranesong purvey for them for low fee a kind of pad to plug into that can lower the gain range by 2, making a mixing version gain range +/-6db wich is far easyer to recal

Are C7-C12 and C13-C18 switched together on a 2 pole switch? Is C13-18 a gyrator? This is a bell EQ right?

I've never heard of that--did you send the unit in for the mod?

absolutely not
CS just sent me a DB15 connector with resitors inside, i just had to plug it

this is most of the time a completly unknown detail,
those insert could be also sent to some compressors for dynamic equing for exemple, i always wanted to try this but never did it

When I was using the Ibis, Cranesong put the resistors into connector shells that go on the inserts. It's a must when using the Ibis for mastering, and it was really inexpensive as I recall. It basically halves the gain range on that puppy.

The pots were pretty fiddly on mine, so I put some rubber washers under the knob for a bit of friction too.

Having used a few different older European mastering eq's in the past - my experience is they can sound excellent but just don't offer by any means the same flexibility (and sometime as much headroom) as more recent designs.

If you already have the W495 then seems to me you've got the "big & clear" vintage-Euro-vibe covered.  The 492 won't get you to the same place and won't help you with 95% of the situations you're going to likely find yourself in.

Anyway - a used GML 8200 can be found for your cash range and can do a good job as well - although I do personally prefer the Sontec.  You can usually find these more easily than Sontec 250's.

Best regards,
Steve Berson
