Sound proofing.... Eco friendly
« on: October 28, 2009, 06:33:54 PM »

Hi,

I'm i the proces of designing a studio in a eco friendly house. I'm in search of a good way to soundproof the rooms. I was thinking of making a construction like this.

wall1(on structural floor): chipboard--studs+airspace filled with compacted sand--chipboard.

gap: contact free gap filled with hemp based "rockwool"

Wall2(floating): studs--eco friendly drywall--greenglue--eco friendly drywall.

What do you think of this construction and what do you think the stc of wall1 will be?

Do you know of good eco friendly acoustic insulation materials that are not too expensive?

thanks in advance

Kind regards

Unless I'm missing something, it appears you are describing a "three leaf" assembly..vs a two leaf system which is better.
At least from what I've read.
By "chipboard", do you mean OSB? And could someone tell me what "eco friendly" drywall is? Confused And how it improves the "eco friendlyness of Green Glue. Very Happy

PS, I don't think Building Inspection Departments will allow wood walls filled with sand unless you can prove it complies with local codes.

I somehow doubt green-glue is eco friendly... And it looks like you don't need it, too.

If the 1st wall is filled with sand so it becomes one big chunk, it's not 3 leaf anymore. But Tetra as a good point with local building code.

It's not 'inexpensive' but check out:
http://www.bondedlogic.com/ultratouch-cotton.htm

I think this is stuff that Thomas has used, or something similar, with good results..?? Any I right Thomas??

We're doing some more research on this stuff right now. I think it's totally acceptable for isolation wall damping, but I don't know if it's got the appropriate density for actual in-room treatments...

Yes absolutely, I use this all the time these days! Smile

Though we are careful because some brands are indeed borderline too dense and therefore not so good for inner treatment.

We use Homatherm with good/steady results - never used the ultratouch thing, but it does look very similar. I've tried another brand (Ecovera (???)) and it was much too dense. Noooo good.

maybee it`s a good material for broadbandpannels unsed for the typical cornertrap basstrapping instead of 703!?
Do you know the flow resistance and the porousity?

cheers

I can't find a stated density on the material, so that other parameters can be calculated?? Thomas, what type of density is the material you use (too lazy to interweb search for it.. is is the Sunday after Halloween)...

Spooky.. FM

Hey Thanks! Homatherm was indeed also on my list to check out.

My english is too bad!  Embarassed eco friendly drywall as in paper chalk paper boards only without chemical addatives. (does this make any sense at all?)

Another to look at FYI "Hempflax"

They make a good rockwool alternative 30kg m3
http://www.hempflax.com/adobe/ISOLATIE-manual-GB.pdf

I will check the other brands also!

Sand isn't going to fly from a building code / cost perspective. For general level isolation, simply adding a second layer of drywall is very effective. Some recycled polyester insulation (uncompressed) is good.

Green Glue is water-based and has almost zero VOCs and is a green building material
