Maybe this is unfair, but I've always thought of it as a marketing term, like "townhome" or "sales engineer."
I'm not sure if I've ever heard a working engineer even use it, but it's inescapable in gear ads.

I am pretty certain that it originally meant a "purpose built studio for a single project" such as a famous artist might do in his/her home.

There are lots of different levels of "project studio"... which can range from 'rawk stah' private studio [i.e. 5150] to some kid with an idea in a bedroom.
For the last 10-15 years it has been a marketing term for "kid in a bedroom" but it doesn't have to be that way.
There are other "project studios" that have millions of dollars worth of hardware and are competently designed.
Being a mainly a "marketing term" it can be applied however you would like as there is no official definition.

I think "project studio" applies to a studio for one's own personal projects that are meant to be completed in that studio; i.e., not a commercial space for others' projects & not a personal studio for just demo-ing or dicking around. A project studio can be a home studio but doesn't have to be.

I have always thought it was the "in between" studio, meaning there are home studio's that range from one mic an mbox an an old computer to top of the line gear and room design but ONLY used for that persons stuff
Project studio can have the same range of gear as above but the person does his/her own stuff and also allows others to work on their projects there, either free or for small amount
but they are not a commercial facility that relies on the studio for the main source of income

I always thought it was a studio that was private and not open to the public as in not commercial.

I like DarinK.. thought it meant someone's own studio usually not at the pro level primarily for the music one is contected to and perhaps also limited use by associates-- Like Alan Sides'z or Terry Manning's project studio or something....haha j/k
