Sony DSP- D7, R7, M7
« on: July 20, 2004, 09:14:11 PM »

I just revisited some of my work from the Mid 90's and keenly remember these pieces. I thought they were killer and it shows on the work. I would not mind owning them again at all!

Anyone used them, have them or remember them?

IF so...what today would you feel is comparable?

They were pretty expensive IIRC.

R7 = reverb
D7 = delay
M7 = modulation

The Modulation unit is a great piece. There is one on the Team Fringe CaPE track. Very cool box, must have 2.

I worked quite a bit with the D and the R. Very good indeed. You can find them pretty cheap now. There was a shop I know who got the three of'em on sale for less than 1k.
i used an MPX500 last weekend for the first time. It reminds me of the R7. Period. Sort of. Well, maybe no.

I own a Sony R7, a D7, the very cool MUR201, and the big sampling verb (S777).  I love the Sony boxes...great sounds, clean and clear.  The MUR201 is a very cool kind of lo-fi true stereo verb, a little noisy, but really nice sounding (like a better sounding stereo REV7).  I would not think of the MPX500 or 550 (both of which I've owned) as similar to the R7...but that's just me.

I really like the D7.  Not as pristine as the 2290, but nice, and stereo (unlike the 2290). Cool tremolo effects, too.

The plates on the R7 are very nice...lonnnnnnng smooth tails for stuff that needs a shimmery kind of verb.

We've got a R in our 'C' room...some cool stuff in there, but - as usual - the presets are designed to sell the box. The editing is a bit of a nosebleed...if you want to change the first parameter only, you still have to scroll to the end of the list to quit editing. The long verbs are a bit grainy, but that is not uncommon across the market.

Cheers,
Tim

I considered the Sony V77 a "poor man's EMT" for many years. After you got rid of the Japanese presets and started with your own tone controls, the V77 produced a credible depth sound with its "cluster" and all.

But mine is gathering dust and I haven't touched it since I got a bunch of TC's  Smile

Interesting. I agree with the Japanese presets though (lol), most of the presets need to lower that presence parameter as well as darken the whole thing a bit.

Once you have done that, you end with somehing a bit more pleasant than TCs that I never been fond of ... Question of taste...

I really think the Sony's are a bit underated imho

I completely agree with Malice...

The R7 is a very underrated unit. Lots of control and options for shaping the sound. My old one got knocked out by lightning and never got back to normal  Sad

I see them used sometimes around here, they typically go for 200-300 bucks wich they're definitely worth.

I even like the DPS V55, the budget unit, for some things. It's not the very best-sounding verbs in the world, but it had some really cool possibilities with its twin engines, and compression and overdrive algorithms. I used on just today on a mix, as a matter of fact... Smile
