pres, need info

need to grab some pre's for "studio B".
i'm kinda leaning toward a Neve flavor. API is another favorite of mine, but the 1081's in the big room do a lot of heavy lifting and they are just simply amazing.
having EQ would be nice, but not critical.
i'm also a fan of the Daking FET compressor, but have never heard his pre's
any thoughts?

Daking pres are great. The EQ is great too.

Do you want to get something sooner rather than later, i.e. no "roll your owns"?
Is resale important to you, or will you keep these things for life?
When do you need me to come 2nd for you?

What about Quad 8?
Mine feel like they kinda split the difference between Neve big and API forward. EQ's are really great...clean...subtle...AWESOME for tracking.
A Designs Pacifica perhaps? You'd need EQ's, but the preamps are nice from what I'm told...haven't heard in person.

You can't go wrong with a 1081 although I think 1073's sound even better. Daking pres are also very nice sounding. API's are obviously classics as well. I would and have had no problem doing an entire record with just APIs.

How many channels do you need?
If the 1081's you already have work very well for you in the other room then something slightly different may also be the ticket.

just 2 channels needed.
i'm not looking to spend a fortune, but i'm also not interested in buying something that isn't going to "last". meaning, the pres need to be able to grow with me and stay in my rack for a LONG TIME.
i hate buying gear knowing that i'll simply be replacing it in a few years with something that does the same job, but better.

To me, a pair of new 1073s is a small fortune... not saying they're not worth it, but ouch.
(Edit, I'm talking about the full on 1073, not the 1290 only 1073DPD which seems confusingly named if you ask me.)

Just saw a pair of BA 1073s on ebay for 4k. I would strongly consider that. I love my pair.

Maybe a Great River MP2NV? I used mine recently for overdubs where the basics had been tracked w/ 1073s and 33102s, and I thought everything played together nicely.

Are these preamps going to be yours and yours alone?
If that's the case...shit, man...find what you like the best and pull the trigger.
If they're going to be a bit of the studio's arsenal...I'd probably look for something in that 1081 camp...they'll give you consistency room to room that's kinda nice when you come to a studio for the console (among other things).

How about a six space API lunchbox with two 512c preamps, two 525 Comps, and two 550b discreet EQ's.
A KILLER portable stereo API "channel strip" !

J.
Many many years ago I bought a 500 series rack and loaded it with 6 API 512s, two 550as, one 560 and one 550b and haven't regretted it a bit. The second rack has 4 A-designs pres which I love as well. I hope to fill that with a couple more pres and some eqs.
I don't find the need for variety in preamps but the versatility of the 500 series rack and the cast of characters you can install in them is what I find great and something i won't ever outgrow.

I've seen a bunch of dudes do similarly.
You could also do a pair of API 7600's...which are roughly the same thing but for about a grand less (according to Mercenary's pricing).

If you dig the 1081's, I'd just get another pair of Neves. You can find them pretty cheap right now. We just picked up a pair of Vintage 1079's (to go along with our 1084's) for less than you can buy a new pair of BAE's or AMS-Neve 10XX series.... That's just my .02
Hope all is well.
