Everything is NOT to be found on the Internet
« on: August 07, 2009, 11:30:01 PM »

Some folks will tell you that you can find all the information you need on the Net.

Well, I dunno.

Does this photo make your heart go pitter-pat?

index.php/fa/13112/0/

Mine came with a different mic, but this is where I learned about editing, proximity effect, saturation, and hanging the mic out the bedroom window at night to record crickets.

Other than the fact that they were built like a brick outhouse, there's not much about Wollensak's on the Web.

Cheers,

I had that machine... I turned it into a 'frippertronics' box by adding a second playback head...

Here is what I found after 10 seconds on the internets by pressing the 'google' button...

Mine must be broken.

Google showed me some of those URLs, but not all.

Curse you, Red Baron.

Actually, there's not a lot of meat on most of these Google-generated links. Some nice photos, but little in the way of origin, history, innards, etc.

However the last one, http://reel2reeltexas.com/vinAd64.html is a real drool-inducing Memory Lane of a page.

After the Wollensak T-1500, I made the leap from two tracks to four with a Norelco 401 "Continental." This 40-pound, suitcase-sized, four speed machine boasted maximum specs of 60-16000 Hz and a S/N ratio of a mere -48db. This was the machine where I learned to bounce and stack tracks. It came with a huge mic of dubious musicality but a lovely stereo image.

Paging Monsieur Proust!

I don't really miss my Rheem at all.  But I did learn a lot fooling around with cheap recording techniques in high school.

Does this photo make your heart go pitter-pat?

It brings me back to my childhood [OK, High School] when we figured out that if you put a guitar pick over the erase head you could do "overdubs" [so long as you got everything perfect from beginning to end].

We are selling emotions, there are no emotions in a grid

"Recording engineers are an arrogant bunch.
If you've spent most of your life with a few thousand dollars worth of musicians in the studio, making a decision every second and a half... and you and  they are going to have to live with it for the rest of your lives, you'll get pretty arrogant too.  It takes a certain amount of balls to do that... something around three"
