Besides the money and the pretty graphs, can anyone give 2 cents on advantages or disadvantages of a product like this v. an RTA mic and a laptop?

What sort of rooms do you need to analyze? A third-octave RTA is not suitable for smaller rooms like control rooms, though it could be fine for auditoriums etc. For smaller rooms I suggest the excellent Room EQ Wizard which also happens to be free.

I was just thinking for all around use, a "throw it in my toolbox" item. A small room would definitely be in consideration for initial use and I would also like to see what's going on "on paper" in my tracking room.

DBX makes that little inexpensive RTA mic. I guess that and REQwizard on a laptop (that I already have) would be a wiser choice economically and functionally?

Yes, especially since you already have the laptop. That dbx mic is good, and you may find this article interesting:

I use the behringer ecm all the time with REQ.
Had never any problems...............
I also tryed other more expesive mics, without any bennefit, so i stay by my Behringer ecm  Smile
