nintendo rock
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:01:50 PM »

so, i'm doing a 6 song EP for a friend of mine.  he calls it "nintendo rock"

apparently you buy ReFills for Reason that are specifically called "nintendo" sounds.

this sounds like a modern pop record filtered through 8 bit nintendo keyboard sounds.

anyone else have these sounds for Reason?

anyone hear of Passion Pit?  that's kinda the vibe we're going for.

I don't think everyone does it through reason.  The genre is usually referred to as "Chiptune".

Here's a video!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kObXYv48oSQ
And a wikipedia link!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiptune

cool.

the difference here is that we have live drums, big rock guitars, bass, and vocals.  along with traditional analog synth and organ, whurly, and various other elements.

Apparently there is a big 8 bit scene. I just cut a 7" that sounds like what you describe. The main guy makes his living composing on his gameboy that is hacked with a line out and some other thing that facilitates programming sounds. He mostly composes for online games. I was impressed. The band is a rock band with those sounds incorporated.

I mastered the Passion Pit debut EP.

You don't need reason for these sounds.  You should be able to find heaps for free just from google.

Otherwise I've got heaps of wav files from various nintendo type games.  Hit me up if you want and I'll upload them for you.

There is quite a big scene and following regarding lo-fi music created using old Nintendo hardware. A friend of mine (we used to work toghether, and he was the very best audio coder I ever had) created something called Little Sound DJ (aka L S D) on Game Boy.

Imagine that there are musicians using this software live, and touring the world...

...it's just weird. But they do the music with it...

I suggest giving a listen to their new record Manners, it's not really 8 bit but damn I love the sound of that album.

I think most of their sound is focused on those really lush, FAT sounds, really a band that knows great drum and synth tones.

I've always wondered about the vocal processing on Michaels voice, or if it's mostly organic harmonization..

sorry I couldn't bring much to the table, I just got a lot of love for that band and felt like chiming in  Razz
