A Jewel for Trident Console Aficionados
« on: July 09, 2009, 10:44:22 PM »

A friend took me out to this very cool studio in the woods outside Portland, Or:http://www.bigredstudio.com/. Very interesting guy owns/operates it. Great to see this kind of place still existing.  For how long is anybody's guess. Hope the place survives.

Go to the link on this page http://www.bigredstudio.com/staticpages/index.php/equipment where it says TSM console.

The availability calendar is alarming.  And alarmingly similar to mine.  Things dropped off a cliff at the end of June.  Eek.

Stay positive Tom!  We were busier than ever for about six months and then had an incredibly brutal two month stretch.  Now, the next two months are booked rock solid- hope the same happens for you.
Cheers,

Great Klaus story and I think Klaus can thank Stephen Jarvis for just about everybody in the bay area knowing who he was.  Stephen gave me my first introduction to the world of Klaus Heyne modded microphones.  I then proceeded to use them as my first choice mics for every session after that initial introduction. In particular I loved his modded U67's and U87's for live Choir and string quartet recordings...

Small world as well as I was at several of the Windham Hill recording sessions over at OTR Studios (Cookies place) when Randy Sellgren was engineering for her. It really is a small industry.

A bit off topic but I had producer July Last in about a month ago. July use to work at the Record Plant in LA and was Jack Douglas assistant on the Lennon sessions (I also learned she was the one that hid the microphone under the console and was responsible to make sure that tape kept rolling to record every conversation) and such she was also Bruce Swieden's assistant on MJ's Thriller as well many years later. When July told me she use to work at the Record Plant I asked if she remembered Scotty MacPhearson and Joel Moss?  Of course she did, then I proceeded to tell her how they both live in Saratoga Springs now... she couldn't believe it.  20 years later on the other coast and here are 3 people that worked together at one of the best studios in the heyday of the industry... small world indeed!

not wishing to be a wet blanket, but the TSM is a pretty good, but not amazing desk.

not like THE Tridents (the A Ranges)

of course in comparison to most IC based desks, the TSM is a killer.

Thanks for the clarification though, of course, the intent of the post was only to show appreciation for someone who maintains, in immaculate condition, a console that a number of great artists chose to use for making their records. Not to attempt to plump up the reputation of the TSM.  And no doubt some of the artist's choices had to do with budget, availability, etc. and the TSM may not have been their first choice in the sonics department.

Did the A range become a console of choice across the board in terms of genre... rock, pop, classical, broadcast? (I'm not a professional AE and was on the other side of the glass in those days on film/tv dates, not really paying much attention to gear. As time went on I certainly worked out that a good AE/mixer was worth their weight in gold.  And then some...)

Are you sure the artists didn't choose to work with PEOPLE to make their records? It's very rare that musicians book a studio for their album based on a largely unknown mixing console...or any mixing console.

I'll bet the artists chose to work with a person, and this was the console that person happened to have.

No doubt that played the biggest part.  At least that's how I've always worked.  Should have put that in the post.  On a re-read I sound pretty narrow minded.  Good catch.

Sorry Rob, been a while since I visited this post... Scott had an old childhood sweetheart that he hooked back up with that lived up this way... Scott is originally from Latham (about a half hour away).  Unfortunately she passed away from cancer this past year.

As for Joel he cam up with Phil Ramone to visit Phil's son at Skidmore (and to play some golf)... and Joel met a young lady up here that he just hit it off with big time. He still has his house in LA but they just built a new house up here as well... so I think he'll be sticking around a while (it's been 4 years since that visit and he hasn't left yet except for work!).

I'm not sure what brought July Last up this way but I know she is also teaching at one of the local collages... she seems like a great person and one hell of an engineer.  Turns out we have a lot of the same friends. Small world indeed.

She has one of the best set of ears of any engineer I've worked with and she is a sweetheart of a person.  Can't wait to work with her again.

Sorry everyone for going off topic... I owned a Trident 80B and a Trident 24 in the past... I like the sound of the 80B a lot... the 24, not so much... but at the time it was an affordable console at a mere 30K for a 28x24!  Funny thing is now no one wants to spend that much for their whole entire studio...

Julie started at Record Plant NY, not LA... and yes, she's great.

She's also the inspiration for the name in Julie's Been Working For the Drug Squad. (The Clash changed the name which was Janie or something else, when they worked at Record Plant)

Thanks William, I knew it was NY as she was working with Douglas... but then went to RP in LA later on... sorry for any confusion.

Didn't know that about The Clash song, I'm going to have to ask her about that next time I see her.
