italian indie rock
« on: July 12, 2004, 08:48:15 AM »

hi all,
I'd like to sponsor some italian indie rock music here in this forum. yes, I'm italian hence the reason.
well, Italy it's not exactly well known for his music, especially rock but there are a lot of interesting bands here around.
if you'd like to take a listen I'd be more than happy to know what you think about it.
here are some links:

http://www.onedimensionalman.com (one of the best act in italy. power punk-hardcore-garage rock, like shellac)

http://www.bogartz.it (garage-blues-rock. very very interesting)

http://www.blankdirt.it (hardrock)

http://www.yuppieflu.net (indietronic, signed with an UK label)

http://www.edwood.it (again indietronic)

these are the first five that come to mind.
hope you like'em.

Yeah! I know them. Not by person by I've heard their stuff more then once. Another great band, half italian half french, quite famous in the italian and french underground scene:

http://ulanbator.free.fr/

I'm their live engineer. The new guitarist used to play in one of the best (in my opinion) italian band ever:

http://www.massimovolume.it/

Here are two of the "big" names. They sell quite a bit of records and their gigs are full of people, a few thousands sometimes:

Marlene Kuntz (art-rock in some ways): http://www.marlenekuntz.com/

Afterhours (indie rock): http://www.afterhours.it/

They both sing in italian but the music has an international flavor.

fourth? no way. dEUS on top of the list.  Cool
Suds & Soda is one of the band's favourite bad now is tiring as it was Smells like teen spirits in the end. Anyway, dEUS are really an incredible band, they started off as a pseudo artpunk collective and now they are reaching a very high level in songwriting. Their lyrics are incredible too even if they're no english.
Any other belgian band you like? Soulwax?

BTW, dEUS will be out with a new album this fall, I'm gonna catch'em live on Sept.4th (my birthday....) in Bologna. It's been a long time since the last gig.

Hey, nice inputs. Do you know Meuws? He's an ex member of dEUS or maybe just a friend. But anyway, he's great. Magnus is also great. I ordered few days ago the solo project from Tom Barman (dEUS' singer) with Guy VanEuten. It's a piano and vocal CD. Mostly covers.
Any other intestign belgian acts?

AFAIK Meuws is a friend/collaborator of the band, but haven't heard anything of him.

Most of the belgian acts I've heard or known are either metal, industrial or a combination of both, a lot of good stuff actually with really poor worldwide distribution, which seems to be the case for most bands outside of the UK/Germany.

Take italy as an example, there used to be more hardcore bands per square meter in Italy than anywhere else in Europe (Including Fugazi, the italian one) but most of which didn't have proper distribution, so what we heard outside of Italy were the Ramazotti's and Paussinni's of the world. *Heaves*

But please don't talk about alchool..... it's been a veeeeeeery looooong weekend.  Cool
I was in Brescia for a gig with Bogartz, Edwood and Lumiere Electrique. Nosilenz Rock Festival.

Are you workin' with someone interesting at the moment?

R.[/quote]

three interesting bands i've worked with are:

-Primadellapioggia,a rock band heavily influenced
by screamo acts like Botch,Breach and early Cave In.
www.primadellapioggia.com

-Lefty Lucy, who sound not unlike Red House
Painters and Kristin Hersh.very introspective and soothing.

-Offlaga Disco Pax who are a spoken-word band
from Reggio Emilia and sound like a cross between Massimo Volume and Joy Division.very acute and funny lyrics.totally unlistenable if you're not Italian.
www.offlagadiscopax.splinder.com

the label Riotmaker seem to be doing pretty good and have very
interesting bands on their roster.unfortunately the ppl
who run it are a bunch of assholes.

i'll PM you and ask for your name,as it is higly likely we
are going to meet someday.ciao bello.

Ciao carne_de_res,

La mia famiglia proviene da Zoppola!

But let's keep it in English because my Italian has faded.

Thanks to everyone for the great links.

Does anyone have any good Italian hardcore / punk links?

Milan used to be crawling with hardcore bands.

Zoppola? it's,like, half an hour drive from where
i live!

speaking of hardcore bands, there are some really
good ones here in Italy.
Spacciatori di Musica Stupefacente and Frontiera
are my favorite as they sound "old school",if you
know what i mean...

Italy has a tradition of famous prog bands:
Premiata Forneria Marconi,Balletto di Bronzo
and Le Orme are heralded as the best of the
italian prog era of the 70's.PFM in particular seem to have
been a cult phenomenon in the States.
i'm not into prog, but i must say that the musicianship
shown in their records is stellar.

nowadays there's a truckload of good prog bands in Italy, but
since prog is famously "uncool",they're under-underground,
if you know what i mean...

i finally had a chance to listen to every band that was posted.....at least every band that offered some english on the websites to help me navigate a bit.

the all italian sites aren't that hard to "decifer".

anyway

i liked about half of what i heard, but wasn't in love with any of it.....i found most all of it to be a little misguided.

very close to be awesome, but the attention to detail in the song writing just wasn't there.

Admittedly, the two songs Ezra Winston posted are not their best work. The rest of "Ancient Afternoons" is a fantastic album, though. I always find myself listening to it regularly.
